    1977 OMC 165hp

Hi, I've posted on Iboats before, but never in this forum. I'm hoping for some more positive advice, all anyone else will say is "don't buy a sterndrive". I am looking at buying a boat with a 1977 OMC 165hp fitted, it was fitted to the boat from new. It's the straight six engine. The boat...

    1970 Johnson 60hp Finally Running

Took the boat out today for a test and the motor ran great. After checking just about everything and not finding out why it wouldn't run at anything but idle I finally found the problem. Someone had fitted a cable clip in the wrong place!! It was restricting the cable movement, and it was the...

1970 Johnson 60hp STILL will only run at idle

Here is the continuing saga of my engine. I bought it secondhand and it had been stood a few years due to a blown amplifyer. I fitted a replacement amplifyer and it ran. But whan I took it on the water as soon as I opened the throttle up it died. So following good advice here I stripped and...

    1970 60hp Johnson won't run over 2000rpm

OK, bit of a long story but here goes. My 1971 60hp gearbox self destructed last week and I found a 1970 60hp for sale at a reasonable price because it was a non-runner due to the ignition amplifyer being dead. As that part was OK on my engine I bought it and swapped the amplifyer over. The...

    Outboard Leg Length

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it's about a Johnson engine. My 1971 Johnson 60hp expired last weekend. I don't know the full story as I haven't stripped it down yet, but when there's a big bang and you lose drive it's going to be bad. When I got towed back to the boat...

    60hp Gearbox Problem

Hi, Sorry this is a bit long winded, but I need to explain the circumstances of the gearbox failure as I think I caused it with a mistake Imade. The engine is a 1971 60hp (60es71c). We went out fishing and when we stopped to anchor I climbed out to put the anchor down like I usually do. I...

    stalled 60hp Johnson wouldn't start

After being out fishing at the weekend I headed back to the boatramp. The boat travelled back without any problems, about 6 to 8 miles. When I got to the boatramp it was busy and I had to queue to use the ramp, but when moving slowly (minimum throttle) the engine stalled -it's got quite a big...

    1971 Johnson 60hp gearbox Problem

Hi, I'm desperate for some help with my engine. It's a 1971 60hp Johnson, 60ES71C. Forward gear doesn't work. Here's a list of what happened and what I've done (sorry it's long, but I wanted to try and get all the facts I could in to help diagnose the problem). We went out fishing theother...

1971 Johnon 60hp -what should the compression be

I've just checked the compression on my engine (which I'd been putting off in case there was a problem). The compression, cold, on the three cylinders was 160, 165, 160psi which is good as they are all similar. But what sort of value should I be looking for?

    Fixing a speedo

I'm working through all the bits that didn't work on my boat when I bought it. I've got to the speedo now, which is a "Smiths" and the part number is FVP5101. This wasn't connected to anything, but having read some posts here I realise there shouldn't be anything inside the tube on the back...

    rev counter connection for 60hp

I'm working through fixing up all the bits that don't work on my boat. After re-connecting the power to the voltage gauge and rev counter in the dash the voltmeter now works. But the input for the rev counter is not connected (not sure if it ever has been connected to this engine). It's a...

    1971 60hp won't go into gear

Hi folks, out on the boat today and when when we went to come home the engine wouldn't go into gear. There was not the usual "clunk" as I moved the lever forward, and the engine just revved without the prop turning. Can someone give me a brief outline of how the gear system works, and any...

1871 60hp using too much fuel

Hi, I've just discovered this forum and need some help. I have a 1971 60hp Johnson outboard on my boat (60ES 71C). It seems to be using far too much fuel, 20 litres (4.4galons) for 25-30km (15-18 miles). It's only a 16' fibreglass boat, so this seems a lot to me. I have a manual on order...
