First time pulling an engine questions

I found oil in my bilge and reached under to feel where it might be coming from. I had heard about the dreaded rust blisters that can form on the oil pan and found one. I'll do one more check to make sure the leak isn't from the dipstick gasket or nut or the bottom of the timing chain cover, but...

    Stalling after reversing

Its been a year and half since spark plugs were changed. I change the cap and rotor about every 6 months since Napa has lifetime warranties on their Echlin line of caps and rotors. Spark plug wires are older. IAC has never been cleaned.

Bogging issue solved with spark arrestor and fuel pick up screen

1997 Parker 2520 170 gallon gas tank all original. 2007 5.7 Volvo Penta Vortec intake fuel injected. For months now I've been having trouble with bogging above 3200 rpm. Did all the usual stuff like cap, rotor, spark plugs, anti siphon valve, wiped the carbon from the throttle body, check the...

Advice sought on tackling prop shaft seal on VP Duo Prop

Both seals were on the shaft. I just pulled one out to see how hard it might be. The first was easy and gave up on the second. The one that came out was black rubber with a small round spring. There are a few videos online showing that the second one can be extracted from a duo prop without...

Advice sought on tackling prop shaft seal on VP Duo Prop

Looking for advice on attempting to change the prop shaft seal on a duo prop. About three weeks ago I learned how to pull my props and drain the gear oil. The gear oil looked great. Put in new gear oil and did a quick trip with the family to a local island. Total runtime about three hours. When...

Pics of my prop hubs and gear oil. First time questions.

The prop was pulled off last year and I was charged $250 for each prop to "repair and balance". I have had the boat in salt water for a total of 13 days since then. All day trips, except for 2 overnight trips. Can galvanic corrosion happen on short trips? A new VP zinc was placed on the...

Pics of my prop hubs and gear oil. First time questions.

I keep my boat in dry storage on a trailer. 2 previous owners ago, the boat was in Florida. When I got it, there were small tropical looking barnacles in hard to reach places on the outdrive so I believe it was left in the water at some point. The hubs could be original to 97!

Pics of my prop hubs and gear oil. First time questions.

Thank you. I did take a wire brush and cleaned everything really good. Then a fair amount of grease. I think Ill pull the props every 4 months for grease and inspect a small amount of gear oil every few months.

Pics of my prop hubs and gear oil. First time questions.

Last year I had my props serviced. They were balance and any blemishes were repaired at a reputable shop. They did note on the invoice that due to internal corrosion, they could not be re hubbed. I recently took the props off to change the gear oil and add grease to the prop shaft. I did find...

Duo prop propeller choice / RPM issue

Thank you. Checked pressure and the high and low were in specs. Compression was good in 7 of 8 cylinders but one was about 20 psi below the others. I know the rotor caps are a weak point and replaced one recently but hit max rpm of 3900 with a new one last time I was testing ideas. I need to...

Duo prop propeller choice / RPM issue

I've current got a Parker 2520 boat that has a weight around 6000 pounds. The current prop is a pair of F3's. I cant seem to get the RPM's above 3900 and wonder if I have the right props. The last person to inspect the props noted some corrosion and stated that I could not replace the hubs...

Duo prop hubs and service question

My 1997 Duo prop outdrive was last serviced 14 months ago. Today I hired someone to pull it off after not finding the time to do it myself. Along with lubing the ujoint, I wanted the prop shaft greased and the first prop came off easy. The second one was stuck on but the mechanic only brought a...

About to do my first VP SX outdrive service and have a few questions

I finally got a manual and read the entire section about removal. The manual does not mention any type of gasket sealer on the two metal flat surfaces but some videos on youtube show guys using it. I will do the Permatex and all the other recommendations you suggest.

About to do my first VP SX outdrive service and have a few questions

Question for you .....Does water ever get past the two metal mating surfaces? Does the bellow form a water tight seal where it meets the gear housing? I'm still trying to wrap my head around how water stays out without using a gasket.

About to do my first VP SX outdrive service and have a few questions

I'm about to pull my outdrive and have a good understanding of how to do it. I have a few questions but will also post what I'm going to do if you have any advice. My plan is to change the gear oil, build a stand, and remove the drive. I've watched videos online and it seems straight forward. I...

Surge brakes not working. Where to start

It was a silly little thing......just needed to hook up the trailer plug! I understand the mechanics of the reverse lockout.....just cant figure out what electric signal allows the brakes to work when plugged in. So for now, no more light rust build up on the disc brakes! Thanks to all who helped.
