Another dumb question, what is the difference between Johnson and Evinrude motors?

What is the difference between Johnson and Evinrude motors? I have one of each and can't see any difference. The parts are interchangeable as far as I can tell.

What are my best options for covering bunks?

I just replaced the bunks on my trailer with PT wood and need to cover them. I'm wondering about what my best options are. I have some indoor/outdoor carpet left over from redoing the interior of the boat and even some heavier carpet left over from my house. Are either of these a reasonable...

Why does an Evinrude airbox cover have two holes plugged

I have a1975 Evinrude 135 and have always wondered why two of the fours breather holes have plugs in them. I'm thinking I should take them out to allow the engine to breath better. Anyone know why they are there and should I leave them in or remove them?

    Piranha prop review

I needed a new prop for my boat (16' low profile speedboat) with a Evinrude 135. I had a couple of 17" pitch 3 blade props but wasn't ever happy with the performance. I decided to try the Piranha prop since they will exchange blades if you don't get the right pitch for your setup. I ordered a 4...

1975 Evinrude 135 not putting out full power.

I have an 1975 Evinrude 135 that does not seem to be putting out full power at WOT. I've had a similar boat (16' low profile speedboat) with a Merc 115 so I have an idea what it should be doing. The engine just doesn't feel like it is running all out. I pulled the cover off and inspected the...

    Will a 1975 135hp powerhead fit on a 1983 115hp unit???

I have a 1975 135hp engine that runs real strong with good compression. Problem is, it does not have tilt and trim. I have a 1983 115hp with tilt and trim but it needs a rebuild. I was just wondering if I could replace the 115 powerhead with the 135 so I'd have a strong 135 with new style tilt...

Trailer weight limit with 1" spindles.

I have a small boat (16' low profile with Evinrude 135) on a trailer. The trailer has 1" spindles. If I'm correct, this means it is a 2K lb axle. The tires are brand new and rated for 2600 lbs (1300 lbs each) and it has 4 brand new and well packed bearings. My thinking is that when we go...

Anyone know the tach setting for a 1975 Evinrude 135?

I wired up a tach to my boat and the rpms are off. I know this is based upon the pulses it gets from the flywheel but can't seem to visually identify how many magnets are in it. Does anyone know how I can determine the proper setting (or know what the proper setting is?). I can probably get...

Recommendations for Martinez Lake and southern Colorado River.

I've been boating/waterskiing the Colorado River since the mid 80's when I lived in LA. We would generally go to Havasu, Parker and Big River. Now that I live in San Diego, looking forward to exploring the southern end of the river. Gathered up the family a couple of weekends ago to see what...

Anybody use low pressure fuel pumps with their outboards?

I recently bought a low pressure fuel pump (3-5 psi) to replace the bulb for my outboard. The reason I thought I needed it is because I installed a tank in the bow and there is 20' of hose back to the engine. My plan was to use a on-off-momentary switch to run it. I'd use the momentary side to...

    Evaluating a 1983 Johnson 115 for rebuild

I recently bought a 1983 Johnson 115 w/ tilt and trim and control box to replace my 1975 Evinrude 135 w/ manual tilt and trim. The newer engine has lower compression compared to my 135 (130 psi for the 135 vs. 85 psi for the 115). Even though it needs work, I couldn't resist buying it cause the...

Carb rebuild vs. spraying in carb cleaner

I have a 1975 Evinrude 135 that runs great at WOT, doesn't idle so well though. It has reasonable compression (125-130) on all cylinders so that doesn't appear to be the problem. I'm contemplating a carb rebuild but with only a month or two left of boating season here don't want to do to much to...

    1975 Evinrude 135 stator/charging issue.

I'm finally finishing up my project boat and took it out for a test run. The motor doesn't seem to be charging. I look at the wiring diagrams, older forum threads and understand the fundamentals of the system, but when I started taking readings from the components, I get real strange data...

Tilt and trim for a mid 70s Evinrude 135hp

I have a mid 70s Evinrude 135hp and am wondering what other models year tilt and trims will work for (even ones that might take minor modification). It seems there are a lot of them available, just not for my year (which I believe to be a '75). Does anyone know what the part number is for the...

    Need help positively identifying outboard

I recently bought and Evinrude outboard and the guy believes it is a 1975 135hp. It has no markings on it and I have no reason to doubt him. The only problem is I'm trying to buy new shift/throttle cables for it and the the pre-1979 ones don't look like they would fit (and don't look like the...

    Mixing my own transom pour

I'm considering mixing my own pourable transom. I've research the available product out there and everything I find seems to be out of FL. HazMat shipping to San Diego on top of the product cost makes it a bit pricey so I've been thinking of buying local ingredients and mixing my own. Based upon...
