My 1998 Seaswirl boat wiring harness has a lot of corrosion in the 12+ pin connector

I am having trouble with the subject. The corrosion has restricted the power and likely ground at the connecter to the boat part of the harness. The engine harness seems fine. Are there any boat wiring harness plugs that are recommended to replace those. Do the pins for the replacement...

Replace OMS pump with aftermarket or Original

My 1998 Johnny 150HPV6 has the original OMS pump. It is working fine, however, It has been 25years or more since new. Should I replace it as a part of PM and if so, should I use a rebuild kit ($195), an aftermarket one ($150) or an oem part for $600?

Why does gearcase have threads and bolts?

My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 (60*) has bolts holding the bearing carrier, plus unused threads at the terminal end of the thru hub exhaust housing. Any idea why those threads are there? Maybe for a bearing carrier puller? I have threads on my Merc gearcase (as is usual), which hold "doughnut" shaped...

Does Tohatsu make motors for Mercury or vice versa?

A few years ago my neighbor replaced his twin 225HP Merc outboards with Tohatsu 225s. He indicated that he could not get new Mercs due to supply chain issues, but the Tohatsu's were the same as Mercury. true or not?

Can I use a 3 wire PTT motor to replace a 2 wire PTT motor and keep the relays?

Some years ago I replaced my entire PTT system on my '93 Merc V6. The original PTT system was 3 wire. The replacement PTT system was 2 wire. I swapped out the solenoids with relays and the included wiring harness to make it work. I have a 3 wire PTT motor from some years ago, that was...

My 1993 merc 135HPV6 has three threaded holes cast into the port transom bracket. These holes are on half round projections that stick out past the transom bolts. The starboard transom bracket doesn't have these. Anyone know what these are for? I originally thought that it was some sort of...

How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

I saw a utube video where a guy ran a 1957 Elgin 12HP, in 5HP, 7.5HP and 12HP "modes". The selection of power was via a keyswitch on the motor. How is this accomplished? RPM limiter? Cylinder deactivation?

Is there a combo Tach and Depth finder?

My Teleflex tachometer looks to be failing. I would prefer to add a depth finder function to my boat, but only use the standard 3" hole in the dash, for the tach. Anyone know of such a beastie?

Is the engine mounting position correct?

The answer is maybe. You might post a picture of the antiventilation plate and it's position versus the bottom of the transom. Bennett or other trim tabs might help more, as they will tend to keep the transom from digging in.

    Antifouling paint on bronze fittings

I have a bronze water inlet for my livewell. Each year I paint it with an ablative antifouling paint (copper based), when I paint the bottom. At the end of the season, the fitting has heavy barnacles on it, many times what the rest of the hull has. The paint is compatible with bronze, and...

I am working on a '93 Merc V6. It has the two trim cylinders plus a single tilt cylinder. I am trying to remove the lower swivel pin, to replace the leaking oring seals. I have removed the cross pin, but the lower swivel pin is stubborn. Any tricks to avoid beating it and possibly breaking...

2006 150HP Optimax surges when accelerating, and then dies

My neighbor's Merc had water in the fuel over the winter. This created sediment in the vapor seperator. The high pressure fuel pump was locked up, but the boost fuel pump was fine. We replaced the high pressure pump and the fuel and air pressure readings on the fuel rails were about 80 PSI...

40% efficiency gain from dual prop bow thruster?

I read an article in BoatUS Magazine on bow thrusters. Their claim was that dual prop thrusters had 40% more thrust for the same wattage, as single prop thrusters. The 40% loss in the single prop thruster was because of the power needed to spin the water. Sounds like crap to me. Anyone have...
