So, 4 years a carb rebuild new exh/risers, thermo and housing, trim units, gimbal bearing, bellows shift cable, sei drive etc... everything seemed like go in the driveway. at the launch, i noticed water in the bilge and saw a leak from one of the risers between the boot and Y pipe. nothing major...

    Hydraulic ram stuck on pin

Trying to remove the hydraulic rams and pin form my transom assembly and they won't free. WD-40'd and light hammering/prying, nothing. Seem to be fused with the plastic bushings and really don't want to snap the transom/gimbal assembly by hammering too hard. Can they be heated to melt the...

She just won't start easy nor stay running 4.3l

Without getting into the issue of why my boat won't start yet, how does the electric fuel pump work? It looks like power is supplied from the the starter. but i don't know when power is actually turned on to the pump. Going further into this, I put a volt meter under multiple conditions to the...

    Lower drive shaft seal wear.

Lower drive shaft seems to have wear around the upper seals. I can feel the difference and wondering if new seals would be ok, or is it time for a new shaft? Replaced upper seals and bellows in attempt to find why the drive gear oil was fairly milky.

Preloading without the rolling dial torque wrench

Is it possible to accomplish the preload on the drive shaft gear set with only a standard torque wrench or should I have a shop do it? Not worth the $$$ to invest in the dial wrench for this one time (hopefully) effort. All I was doing was to change the seals so no new bearings. Alpha one Gen 2

    proper shift bellows install.

I can't seem to find any info on how far the shift bellows needs to be pushed onto the cable. Does it butt up tight to the bell housing and cover the exposed metal crimp on the sheathing? Been a couple years since it was removed.

    Exhaust Bellows or Not

Hi All, I'm replacing the bellows on my Alpha one Gen2 and the kit came with an exhaust bellows. My current setup has just a open ended rubber tube clamped to the transome that the outdrive exhaust port slides into when the is drive attached to the gimbal housing. Question is would it be better...

Reason for plug position when installing u-joint?

So I'm replacing my u-joints and I noticed the instructions state the lube plug should be facing the coupler yoke (longer spline) when installing. Is this really important? Seems to me it would make no difference. And don't call me out. Yes, I started installing it that way. :)

    Sooty buildup in thermo housing

While I have a good amount of corrosion, I noticed my thermo housing had an awful lot of what appears to be exhaust soot as opposed to just rust. Black as a sheep. Now this doesn't make sense to me and last year it started easily after a couple seasons down time. No water in the oil that I...

shift cable guide snapped off in bell housing

I was replacing my gimbal boot and shift cable when the shift cable guide snapped off. I've tried pb blast and a easy outs but it just won't budge. It's only brass but seems unlikely I'd be able to carefully cut it out. Any idea's? Ken

    Gimbal Housing water inlet corrosion

Any chance of saving this housing with jb-weld or an insert? I'd be wary of any product breaking loose and blocking my inlet or breaking the water pump. Ken

Exhaust manifold rusted at engine port.

I removed my 6 season exhaust manifold and risers off to inspect over the winter and have now just gotten to it. The boat is used about ten times a year in saltwater and usually flushed after each use. I noticed the two engine ports on rear of the 4.3 v6 are carbon coated while the other 4 ports...

    Set Screws or what?

I'm trying to remove the lower shift cable Alpha 1 Gen 2 and all I have for cable locks are shown in picks. Are these just remnants of set screws?

    Clean cuts in hull

I'm considering purchase of a 2001 Monterey 262 and have some concerns with regard to clean straight breaks in hull along the helm area starboard and port side of boat. There are a few of these some worse than others. Can anyone tell me how serious these may be? I know gelcoat cracks don't look...

Burning rubber and oil leaking into bilge

I have a 1999 Sea Ray 190 Cuddy Alpha 1 Gen 2 4.3L MCM that started smoking with a burning rubber smell. I forgot about the rubber issue and let the boat sit for a few weeks. Got back in and experienced the same issue within a couple miles. Next thing I know, I have a fair amount of oil in my...

    Bonding wire

Not sure which section to post this under but I want to know what bonding wire is made from, tinned copper? I need to make a small repair and would like to just solder the lug and wire back together.

    New Ignition Sensor

I replaced my ignition sensor with this sierra model which was spec'd to fit my 4.3 Thunderbolt IV. Not sure if the black wire is ground. Anyone know? My old one was only two wires.

    Starter wiring diagram

I am looking for a legible starter wiring diagram for my Mercuiser 4.3 Alpha one MCM.The manual is just not legible. Does anyone know how it is wired?

    Starter bolt snapped

One of the starter bolts loosened and snapped the other on my 4.3L Mercruiser. This is the bolt closest to the block,it's recessed about a 16th inch and since the opening faces down towards the bilge it isn't easy to access. I took off the riser and exhaust but still can't work very easily...

Engine won't start again after first fire of the season

I started my boat for the first time to flush the antifreeze and see how it was running. Put new plugs and fuel filter on. Fired right up and I let it run for a while to juice up the battery. After a few minutes it stalled and it has been 2 weeks now still no luck starting it. Does not sputter...
