    Paint color

My old boat had a 1998 Johnson Ocean Pro that was painted white. My new boat has a 1999 Johnson Ocean Pro that is painted a dark grey. Is the only difference the paint color or is there some other significance to the different colors?

    Aquasport Hardtop

I am looking at, and will probably buy, a 215 Aquasport Explorer. Only negative is it has a bimini top, and I would really like a hardtop. Before I look at aftermarket hardtops does anybody know where I might find an original factory hardtop? Thanks.

    What size motor?

I am looking at a Mercruiser I/O with w 5.0 liter motor. Is this a 302 Ford or a 305 Chevy block? Also, was it available only with 4 bbl. carb? If so , what is HP? Also, with light use (under 200 hours in 10 years) in salt water, what is life expectancy of manifolds/risers if motor is salt water...

    Advice

Except for a two week period of time 30 years ago, I have always had either outboards or straight inboards. I am now looking at a 10 year old 21' Aquasport with a 5.0 Mercruiser I/O. Motor has under 200 hours. I am pretty sure it is raw water cooled (salt). Boat is at a dealer who sold it new...

    Year?

I am looking at a 20' Grady White Overnighter. Looks like this model was replaced by the Adventurer series. What year was the name changed? Owner thinks it is a 2003, but I can't find a reference to it after early 90's.

    temperature problem?

Put boat in water today. Motor is a 96 Evinrude 150. New thermostats and pump middle of last season. Ran great all season. Today at normal running 4,000 RPM temp. is fine. WOT (~5,000 RPM) temp. climbs to edge of "green", almost in "red". As soon as I reduce RPM all is well again. no other...

    diameter and rpm change

I am in the process of deciding what size prop to buy. I know if I decrease pitch I will pick up RPM, but most of the replacement props are 15.5 in diameter. How much does an additional half-inch in diameter affect RPM?

    pitch change

Boat is a 20' Hydrasport DC. Motor is a 98 Evinrude 150. Bought motor from a dealer last summer. He put on a 15X17 new prop. Max RPM is 4400. I think motor should be able to reach 4800-5200. I believe for every 2" in pitch you gain 200-300 RPM? So, maybe I should change to a 15X15 or even a 15X13?

    Crossover vs. looper

I have a 1989 175 Johnson that is giving me all sorts of problems starting. I have a chance to pick up a much newer (1998) 150 Evinrude at a good price. Salesman tells me old engine is a "crossover" design, new engine is a 60 degree looper. He makes two claims: first, newer engine should...

    Easy swap?

Currently have 1990 boat with 1990 175 Johnson. Engine is a little tired. I am looking at a 2000 175 Johnson. Question is this: the newer motor has no controls, wiring, etc.-just the motor. Would this be an easy swap? Could I just remove and replace the motor using existing controls, wiring...

    Evinrude models

An ad recently published was for a new 175 Evinrude for $7500. Model was an E175fpsln (I think)- obviously not an E-Tec, but I can't find out what it is...I don't want to call the dealer yet and get into a long conversation with a salesperson-can anybody tell me what motor this is?

    trolling with smart tabs

Boat is a 20 hydrasport with a 175 Johnson. Just bought a set of Smart tabs to install in a few weeks. I use my boat for trolling probably 80% of the time I am fishing. I know the tabs will be a benefit during my steaming time, but how about when I troll? I would think they would create more...

    Class decorations

Hi everyone, I am a high school science teacher in CT. WE are encouraged to decorate our rooms to add a personal touch, but the cost is our responsibility. Since I love the water (I spend a lot of time on Long Island Sound) I thought it might be nice to decorate my room with a "nautical" theme...

    Need zincs?

Next month I plan on installing a set of SMART tabs. Being stainless I am concerned about electrolysis, although the zincs on my motor mount are close. Last week at the local boat show I noticed that many boats had tabs, but only one had actually drilled a little hole in his tabs and installed a...

    Trim tabs questions

I am considering trim tabs for a 20' Hydrosport DC with a Johnson 175. I have a few questions... 1. It seems Smart tabs are the accepted standard-anybody have any experience with any other brand? 2. I see two different possiblilties-either the stainless or the less expensive plastic. The...

    right plugs

Motor is a 1991 Johnson 175 VRO V-6. Manual calls for Champion plug # QL77JC4 with a gap of .030 Most of my fishing trips are a 15 minute ride @4000 RPM, then 3-4 hours of trolling @1200 RPM, then 15 minute ride back @4000 RPM. I usually change plugs midway through season. My question(s)-would I...

    no power

After sitting for an extended time (a week or more) my engine (1991 175 Johnson VRO) needs several attempts before it will start. If it does not start after 3-4 attempts, the next time I turn the key to start the system goes dead electrically- no starter spinning and all of the gauges on the...

    head gasket?

Motor is a 1991 Johnson 175 V-6. Seems to be a line of corrosion that follows the head/block seam on the port side. Is this an easy fix? Or am I opening up a potential can of worms?

    Charlie D.

Boat is a 20' dual console. Previous owner was an idiot. I am not the best with electrical. Here is the problem: Bow light and stern light-three position dash switch- middle should be both off, up both on, down stern on only. Right now up and down turn both lights on, and bow light stays on...

    leaky carbs

Motor is a 1989 175 J ohnson V-6 with three 2-bbl carbs. Bought the boat last year. When at dock, I would tilt up motor, then I realized the carbs were leaking the fuel out of float bowls and I would have a hard time starting, trying to fill bowls and yet not flood engine. After several attempts...
