    1989 Yamaha 90hp Trim/Tilt Problem

Hi, first post here as I bought a boat with a Yamaha 90 on it. A few weeks ago I noticed that the engine was dropping down on the hydraulic ram. When I left home the safety stand was free but when I got to the ramp the motor weight was down on it and I had to pump the hydraulics back up to...

    Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Re: Exhaust Identification V6/V8 The serial number on the transom assembly is OF846103 and this is a photo of the exhaust mount. As you can see it has an extra mounting hole on one side and the spacing of the four holes seems different to the exhaust as well.

    Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Re: Exhaust Identification V6/V8 It doesn't fit the GenII Alpha transom I have, that has an extra bolt hole on one side and the spacing of the four holes is slightly longer on the exhaust than the transom. Here's the whole thing, with the pipes that came with it.

    Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Re: Exhaust Identification V6/V8 This is the flange on the exhaust I have. What does this fit?

    Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Me again with more odd questions. I have managed to find a secondhand exhaust for my engine, but I'm not sure if is the correct one (I believe the V8 and V6 ones are different). I'll make it fit, but need to identify which one it is for buying the shutters and other ancillary parts. The main...

    Mounting Template

I have just removed an MC-1 transom plate and I'm replacing in with an Alpha GenII transom plate. The mounting holes and hole required are different. Is there somewhere that has a template for the holes required to fit the drives so I can work out exactly how to do this. I'm sure this must be...

    Engine Spares

I have seen it mentioned that only Mercruiser parts should be used, not standard car parts. Does this go as far as gaskets? I have the heads off my V6 and want to get some new gaskets to put it all back together, do I really need to use Mercruiser ones or can I get some from an auto shop?

    Engine Identification

As anyone who has seen my recent posts will know I have removed the engine from my boat. The main reason was to replace the drive, which was worn out, but while it is out I'm stripping the engine as far as removing the heads to check it all out and do any work I find needs doing. It is a V6...

    Steering Conversion

Re: Steering Conversion I think Chris has it, here are photos of the old and new inner transom plates; The old plate still has the end of the teleflex cable attached.

    Steering Conversion

My boat had an MR drive on it, but that is beyond repair so I'm replacing it with a secondhand Alpha unit. The steering was via a teleflex cable, which fitted into a bracket on the MR inner transom plate, obviously the Alpha plate is different. Apparently I can get an adapter for a couple of...

    V6 Engine Removal

I'm planning to take the V6 out of my boat and put it in the garage on an engine stand while I fit a new drive. Any general advice for problems to watch out for, and what servicing would be worth doing to the engine while it's out. Without going mad and completely rebuilding it I'm guessing...

    High Voltage on Johnson60

I have a 1986 Johnson 60hp, AJ60TLCDS, and it is charging at too high a voltage. Everything was working fine but I fitted a new radio, which showed a high voltage error when the engine was running. So I bought and fitted a volt meter to check. Just taken the boat out for a run and it's...

    Gauges not Working

I have just bought a boat with a 1986 Johnson 60 on it (AJ60TLCDS ser.A0614076) and the tacho and trim gauge don't work. I cleaned up all the connections on the trim gauge, and as soon as the ignition is turned on the needle drops off the bottom of the scale and stays there. I presume this...

    Transom Plate Assesment

Re: Transom Plate Assesment It doesn't look too good either, here are a couple of pics. it's a bit shiny as I sprayed soem WD40 to get rid of the muck.

    Transom Plate Assesment

I have an early MC-1 drive, which I've been having problems with. Finally got the bell housing off to remove the stuck driveshaft. The clip holding the bearing in wasn't even there, so I pulled the shaft out with a slide hammer, but it left the bearing stuck in anyway. I'll need to get a...

Replacing 165 drive with Alpha drive

My boat has a 165 drive, which is now in quite a poor state. Spares for this are not too common, and it would be difficult and expensive to rebuild. As an alternative I'm considering replacing it with a secondhand Alpha drive. This will make spares easier if I ever need to do more work, and...

    Engine Weights

As anyone who has seen any of my previous posts will realise I'm having some trouble with my 165 drive. I'm considering replacing it with a newer Alpha1 drive. The drive I'm looking at is currently fitted to a V8 engine (260hp), which could come with the drive for not a lot more cash. The...

    Bell Housing Pin Removal

I need to take the bell housing off a 1976 165. The manual says "remove cotter pins". How do you remove a pin that is flush with the gimble ring and has no rear access?? Should this pin be sticking out to grab it?

    Mercruiser leg oil leak

Having got the engine running Ok (see my last thread) I took the boat out to do some fishing yesterday. Didn't go far, which was a good thing. When I took the bung out and drained water there was some oil in it. It didn't seem to have come from the engine, so I thought it must have been the...

Possible vacuum leak on a V6

I recently bought a boat with a V6 mercruiser in it. I haven't got it running well yet. The first time I took it out I could only get the engine to 2000rpm even at full throttle when driving the boat, but it revved fine out of gear. The fuel pump seemed small to me for the size of engine, so...
