Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Me again with more odd questions. I have managed to find a secondhand exhaust for my engine, but I'm not sure if is the correct one (I believe the V8 and V6 ones are different). I'll make it fit, but need to identify which one it is for buying the shutters and other ancillary parts. The main body "bull-horn" has the number "815786-C BR" cast into it and the 90 degree elbows have "14802-C" cast in them, but these don't seem to match mercruiser part numbers. Does anyone know what these are, and what the actual mercruiser part number for them is?

OK, I now know what someone was probably going to tell me anyway. That is that this is the wrong exhaust, and the bolt centes on the flange are not the same as my alpha GenII transom. So what is this off?

Those numbers are casting numbers, not part numbers. Tell us what engine/drive you have and we can tell you what parts you need. And no, Alpha One and Alpha One Gen II parts are not generally interchangeable..

I can get part numbers for an exhaust for an alpha genII from the internet, but what I now need to know is what I have. Unfortunately identifying parts is tricky when you buy second hand and don't know where they came from.

What is 'your engine'? If it's Gen II, then the only parts in the exhaust system that are different between V8 and V6 are the manifolds and the aluminium tube behind the elbow. EVERYTHING else is exactly the same.

Post photos of what you bought.

Re: Exhaust Identification V6/V8

The engine is a 1996-98 4.3l V6 that was fitted to an MR drive to replace the original straight 6. The drive needed replacing so I bought a second hand alpha GenII drive. I bought a second hand exhaust, with the casting numbers on that I posted. But it doesn't match the transom plate, so it is obviously for something other than an alpha GenII. I'm trying to identify what it fits, so I can sell it on or trade it for the right one.

If the original transom plates are still on, then the bullhorns will be MR too... You may have the Gen II bullhorns. Post a photo.

Just from that flange is difficult to tell, but that looks a lot like the same flange used from about 1982 to present. Can you post a shot of the shutter ends and the overall pipe? And does it have any casting numbers on it?

It doesn't fit the GenII Alpha transom I have, that has an extra bolt hole on one side and the spacing of the four holes is slightly longer on the exhaust than the transom. Here's the whole thing, with the pipes that came with it.Exhaust.jpg

MerCruiser Y Pipe with Casting Number 44265-C or 815786-C should = P/N 807130A4 according to this place,

That's what I have. I think he's wrong about what it fits though, could be Alpha and Bravo but doesn't seem right for my Alpha GenII. I've checked on Mercruiser.com and they have the same list, which makes it the right part. Can anyone explain why it doesn't fit?

What is the serial number of the transom assembly? If still readable you should be able to find the S/N on the outside of the boat on the T/A.

Also if possible, are you able to take a photo of the inside of the boat where the Y pipe bolts up along with a photo of the transom assembly. Chris & Don, and a few others are usually pretty good with good clear photos.

Good luck.:)

The serial number on the transom assembly is OF846103 and this is a photo of the exhaust mount. As you can see it has an extra mounting hole on one side and the spacing of the four holes seems different to the exhaust as well.Transom.jpg

Re: Exhaust Identification V6/V8

Forget the side hole, it's used with the 4 cyl exhaust pipe only, not the V engines.

History of exhaust Y-pipes.
The 'current' design started in late 1982, with the 'R' drive, and the original part number (for use with 4" exhaust elbows) was -44266T. If you follow the suppression of that number, it finishes as -807130A4. The only change in that time was the shutter design. All the bolt hole spacings remained the same.

If you do a search on all products using that later part number it is still the current number for the exhaust Y-pipe on all Alpha and Bravo transom assemblies. (The same transom assembly is used on all engine applications).

Ergo... That pipe should fit on your Alpha One Gen II transom assembly.

Brilliant, I thought I was going mad but that answers it. The fifth hole has been used on the transom I have, so I thought my exhaust had to have that hole, but the transom could have been used with a four cylinder engine before I had it, not a Vee engine. That's a big relief, as I thought I had the wrong exhaust.
