    only way to know is to make 110% sure delicate idle circuits in all carbs are clean, and firing on all 3 with good compression, and squeeze the primer bulb as it bogs. if it picks up, you can bet its the fuel pump. if the pump is bad, it will fall on its face right away but idle happily for 5...

    i dont think the dowels are of particular concern, but the shimming sure would be. thats something that must be done. you could get lucky and its fine, but thats a risk i wouldnt take after all that work.

    yep. for a couple hrs then run the motor. to get everything off i use grease to seal the rings off and a soft wire wheel to get all carbon off with engine tuner, then polish off to remove any micro scratches just to be safe but there are never any as im not pressing hard w. the dremel

    they look very good to me. id get those pistons soaked in engine tuner or power tune while the heads are off to remove all carbon until they are very clean with a brush. this will cut down on heat buildup and thus chances of detonation. should be done religiously 50 hrs without fail.

    looks like the parts motor you have MIGHT work as its a fine spline (last year of older style trim pretty interesting). as you said swap shift shafts and see if it will work. it is very possible the driveshaft is too thick though. i feel like ive compared the 2 driveshafts once and the 3 cyl...

    i believe the etec 40-60hp motors used the same gearcase as a 50-70hp 3 cyl 1989-up but not sure if the driveshaft is the same. just food for thought. you;d need to compare part #'s.

    well the flywheel should always be spinning clockwise no guessing needed! if the gearcase is a counter-rotating one you'd see a "CR" stamped at the very end of the propshaft but flywheel would still spin clockwise. if its popping thats something different and would either be a sheared flywheel...

    are you sure the rubber grommet is in the pump for water tube? the o ring is behind the plate AND underneath the impeller? keyway is in good shape?

    how did you test oil pump? they are dirt cheap now brand new OEM thankfully. they had an upgraded/superceded pump might want to compare part #'s between yours and the newer one

    NEVER rely on the temp of the water coming out of the indicator! it means absolutely NOTHING other than pump works! each cylinder head has a flat spot on TOP. at idle, what is the temp at each one? 125-155f is what you are looking for. if thats in range, i suspect you simply have a clogged...

    no problemo. sorry i assumed you had the motor hanging! i would get a hoist and hang it. will be much faster in the long run. the tilt tube is the tube on top... the thing the steering cable goes through. has a 1 1/4'' nut on either side to hold it in. the whole swivel assembly hinges on it...

    Removing tilt and trim unit from 2004 johnson 90hp

    you really need an air hammer if its that seized. loosen the tilt tube nuts and whack the transom clamps away from the bottom pin. hopefully they break free after a good soak. do not try to remove that pin it will be so seized. also each side of the pin has a wire retainer that needs removed.
