82 Starcraft MR 180 floor, slight refit and leaks

If you have fiberglass time and money, I'd just do fiberglass and skip the OTF. The epoxy will seal the wood off really well.

Not quite related to the boat. I found some clear, tintable enamel base made by krylon yesterday, and have been using it as a cheap medium for mixing mica and candy pigments for testing possible car colors. I am surprised by how well it flows to gloss, even after accidentally touching...

82 Starcraft MR 180 floor, slight refit and leaks

I don't have the answer on if one is better than the other, but some thoughts. Paint thinner flashes off quicker, so will mineral spirits keep the BLO thinned longer and maybe penetrate deeper? Maybe timing doesn't actually matter and BLO will penetrate as far as it will either way? But does...

82 Starcraft MR 180 floor, slight refit and leaks

I saw my name invoked so thought I'd chime in. I used 1/2 cdx with thinned BLO, then spar and latex over the spar. The topside was also covered with glued and painted on canvas which I trust to waterproof the top. That was all under a different budget. If I were to make the floors today, I'd...

Fishfinder probably is fine, but I like everything at the dash, especially if it's sunny and I'm fighting glare, also just feels like a complete dash then. I've been using a phone app in test runs, but I don't have a mount and it isn't the safest.

    68 Offshore restoration

A couple progress pictures. Reattached dash and working on instruments. I will mount a gps speedometer and somehow hardwire it (usb powered). I also have a digital tach to hardwire (battery operated). I'll probably go the easy route and find an automotive usb outlet rated to the correct...

Finished up the foam today. Had some more bubbles. I think my issue was not letting the contact cement dry enough, mixed with the foam being slightly oversized and under constant pressure. Redid those and I'll check them in the morning. It's not fantastic but better than a thousand holes...

    68 Offshore restoration

Some progress. Revised bow flooring is complete. Latches still needed. Then I sanded/countersunk/cleaned the gunnel holes and patched with putty. Now I'm working on covering with EVA foam. There's some air bubbles, but I think I can fix that with more contact cement. It was a little sparse in...

    That's the goal.

    68 Offshore restoration

Not much in the way of updates due to car repairs taking priority. I did decide my final direction for the gunnels. If I patch the holes, putty or weld, and then paint, the finish will never look right. So it's back to a covering. The budget has inflated a little more, so I went looking for...

    68 Offshore restoration

Tried some basic wood graining, not sure if I'll keep it this way, I'll decide after it dries. If not, I'll just paint the whole thing grey, maybe give some scrapes for texture.

    68 Offshore restoration

Not the final placement for the anchor, it really just ended up there to avoid any ER visits while kids played up front. (Hatch was down, covering it.) I'm not really sure where final placement will be, it might just be permanently stored in an anchor nest once I make one. Otherwise, I plan...

    68 Offshore restoration

Small progress today. Cut instrument holes and started painting the dash, I'll probably do some kind of grey woodgraining. Also started surgery to add a hatch in the front bow platform.

    68 Offshore restoration

Update. I made some front support for the center bow hatch and attached the hatch by hinges. The fit isn't perfect, but I have some other floor supports I am retrofitting that should pull things into place. I made some aluminum skins for my dashboards, still need some holes cut for gauges...

Welder is a yeswelder ac/dc/pulse tig/stick. AC, adjustable frequency, I've tried anywhere between 60 and 180 hz. I've been brushing and then wiping down with acetone as I've seen recommended. Amps, I've been setting to the thickness of the metal, so 60 amps for .060, 125 for .125. Tungsten...

    68 Offshore restoration

I realized that the scrap I was using wasn't from the boat but from a billboard, so unknown material. I found some scrap from the boat and tried again. I don't have the stack of dimes down, but getting the hang of straight beads, still need to work on filling the end crater. Filling holes...

It does have pulse, haven't played with it yet. What kind of settings do you use for filling holes? I'm thinking about 1/8 or so screw holes.

    68 Offshore restoration

I think I may stick to the 3/32 tungsten rather than the .040". It balls less and doesn't seem to weld any worse. The .040 just keeps slowly rolling back. I probably need some new aluminum to get the technique down first, but if I weld the screw holes on the gunnels I won't have a choice...

    68 Offshore restoration

My experience so far has been flux core on steel. No true mig and no spool gun experience. TIG torch and filler control is certainly taking some getting used to. I am currently practicing with scrap from the boat, so definitely old and thick corrosion. I wire wheeled as best as I could and...

    68 Offshore restoration

Back at it today to kick off project season. Installed some rear seat covers. I originally wanted to have these fold all the way back (flat), but decided today there's no good reason for that. So I will find some method to attach them to the seat backs that allows each to slide relative to...
