Bizarre oil leak when changing gimbal Alpha 1

This response is what I was looking for. I am well aware of how to find leaks. I was looking for other's real life experience given there are so few places for the gearcase oil to leak. In my case I determined the shift linkage was slightly jammed and had allowed some leakage. As I said above...

1996 GM 5.7L Vortec Carb'ed and Thunderbolt IV Ignition Setup

I am intrigued. Why does too much initial timing cause water to get ingested? I ask because I am running 10BTDC with TBIV and the boat goes like a raped ape. (apologies to all who identify as simian on this page) I am fortunate in that I have an endless supply of high octane fuel I get for free...

Bizarre oil leak when changing gimbal Alpha 1

Was looking for a response as to how it could leak in the absence of a seal problem. I had just used the boat the week previously after doing the impeller with no leakage. Gear oil change showed no water intrusion. Did the gimbal bearing (which is when the outdrive leaked). Yesterday I spent 6...

Bizarre oil leak when changing gimbal Alpha 1

I removed the complete drive unit and replaced the gimbal bearing. While handling the outdrive nothing seemed amiss. It sat off the boat on it's side for 24hrs. When I picked it up I had outdrive oil leaking down and out of the prop. Strange that it sat there fine and then started leaking at the...

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

In response #6 I mistakenly used the word peaks when I meant marks. Each mark is 2 degrees.

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

The scale shows BeforeTopDeadCenter also known as BTDC. You should set it for 6-8 degress BTDC, depending on the quality of the fuel you run.

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

Sorry forgot to respond. Scott06 is correct. When you bump your timing the rpms will likely increase. reset idle and check timing again.

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

If you look at the timing marks on the front of the engine you can see the number for each pointer. The numbers get bigger as you go counter clockwise. Deepest notch is 0, on the right end of the marks. So 4 marks (peaks) counter clockwise should be 8 degrees before top dead center

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

Thanks for the reply. I had thought the TBIV was a big module but this website showed me it was a small one with the same plug I had seen already. I wasn't sure if I still needed a wire to set the base timing. Thanks

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

Upon further study it looks like the boat has TBIV ignition. I can't seem to find the timing info online.

1994 Mercruiser 5.7 timing issue- no purple/white wire

Hi. Cant find a white/purple or purple/white wire to put the TBV ign into timing mode. The only wires laying on top of engine are the shift interrupter and the purple wire that services the coil (and I presume excites alt) and goes forward to the kill switch on the dash. It does run on top of...
