Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Ya my wife and her dog were on board. The situation could have been soooo much worse. We usually wear life jackets while under way and always have them out of the storage while fishing etc. We did neither that day. But we will %100 from now on. When I’m alone on the boat I always wear one even...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Ya me too. The blue one is broken in the front. But I know how that happened. 🤡

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Ya I’ll be cutting a chunk off of the blue units skeg and welding onto the white one. I’m going to refurbish the replacement before I put it to use.

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

I’m a happy boy! Best advice in this entire thread! It’s gonna work. I changed the shift rod and the water pump housing and it all good.

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

The mod # of my broken unit is E40DTLABA I'm aware of the different gear ratios. If I fix this thing I will probably have to get the right prop for it. I'm ok with that. I appreciate your knowledge and decades of experience. Having worked in the trades for almost 30 years I have an appreciation...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

I can and will measure the drive shaft and also compare to the old one. the old busted prop fits on the prop shaft on the white unit. So, that's a plus. Also, the blue unit (the broken one) has 2 alignment dowels where it bolts up the motor. The white unit doesn't have any. And the holes aren't...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

VJ60TLESM This was a running motor a few years ago. I re-did the carbs on it for him. But a year or so later the motor was pretty much a dead dog. It ran, not very well tho. The #1 cyl is way down on compression. Anyway he took it off and purchased a new 60hp Merc. He said that it was stubborn...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

I picked up this motor from my neighbor. The gear case is identical to mine. Except it doesn’t have a gaping hole in it. LOL From a quick look I can see that the shifter rod will have to swapped. This one has an offset at the top that the e-tec one doesn’t have. I’m going to cross check part...

That’s interesting. My neighbor has a 60hp that the motor is shot. It’s an early 90s Johnson VRO

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

I think it’s pretty much an anchor. An expensive one at that! LOL But my curiosity is satisfied. I know what makes it work…. And not work. TBH I’m sure I could fix it, but add up the cost, ( prop shaft alone is $675) and all the work/time, it’s just not worth it. Add in that in the back of my...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Ya I think I’m gonna start cutting, delicately, into the case if nothing else just to see whats fu**ed up. Ya never know I might be able to save it. Or maybe save the guts, get a new prop shaft and maybe find an empty gear case? Either way, the boat is wrapped up again as if we’re coming into...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say. What makes it an easy fix? Buying a replacement? According to the manual ya have to push down on the shift rod and the prop shaft will come out. Therein lies the problem. The damage to the case won’t allow the shift rod to go down. Which, as I explained in...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Ya I did all that. My good buddy who lives on the other side of the country now, was a marine tech for about 30 years. He has been walking me thru this tear down.
