Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

I decided to take the boat to a very reputable guy here who makes repairs and builds new aluminum boats. He sort of a different entity than the local welder that I used before. I know he’ll do a proper fix, just afraid of the cost! I’ll post some photos after the fix 🙏

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

Thank you MC Tool. Appreciate the regards for my dad. Yes, I think it'll still be a happy outcome. Part of the distraction is learning, shopping amazon and other sites, watching Sampson Boat Co. build Tally Ho. All good stuff.

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

Hey Mike, Thanks for the sentiment, and for the advice. I agree, it might become a stress point. I’ll have to think about it. The Coosa being only partial height, I can’t remember exactly why I did that. The original wood transom sat above the knees and was only about 8” deep, maybe I just...

Thanks Mark, right now I am planning a 15hp 2-stroke Johnson.

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

Thank you all for your input. To tell you the truth, my dad is in hospice and this boat project sort of serves as moments of relief as I am able to work on her. Welding on the float pods was to be the last major item before I paint the back stern and do final assembly of benches, motor...

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

Ok, I have a cousin who is specializes in airframe construction. He was in the national guard and repaired planes with rivets, etc. and has the tools (rivet gun and bucking bars). I want to present this to the group to see what you all think: The deformation is almost all above the pods. What...

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

I will not disclose whether I paid for it or not, but I guess that answers the question for you! I'm not a welder, but I think they do look good. He did say that he was going only about 4" at at time, but you're right, as soon as he got some deformation he should have stopped. The good thing...

Aluminum transom has had heat distortion

I’m hoping to circumventdiscussion about whether pontoons or float pods are effective, and I have a problem. I bought float pods from Beaver tails and had a local welder weld them onto the transom. The process of doing so completely distorted the transom. He’s willing to bang it back in the...

Anyone know of float bags that can be placed in the bow of small boats in lieu of foam?

Can I put a 28 hp Johnson on my 14' Aluminum Sea King?

Thanks jimmbo, This is what I'm afraid of! Doing all of this work then being underpowered! If I do the calculation on the Sea King, it's rated for 15 hp max. but I think that would still be underpowered. What's the reality of putting an outboard on her that's beyond the power rating? I see...

Can I put a 28 hp Johnson on my 14' Aluminum Sea King?

Thanks aspeck, Yes, it's a controls boat. Just worried that the weight would sink the back too much into the water, but I'll be up front and just have kiddos, batteries and tank at the back. Based on my calculations, it's rated for a 15 hp, but not sure if I calculated properly.

Can I put a 28 hp Johnson on my 14' Aluminum Sea King?

HI all, I have a 2004 Johnson 9.9 hp 4 stroke slated to go on my 14' Seaking. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1987 Johnson 28 hp Johnson 2 stroke with controls and all, complete. Tempting. The 9.9 weighs about 84-93 lbs, while the 28 weighs about 130-170 lbs. Which is the better motor...

Wiring harness #5034072 for 2004 Johnson 9.9hp outboards are no longer available anywhere that I can see. Anyone have leads on anyone who might be able to make one or has a stash?

Wiring my 14’ sea king from scratch….help!

Glad it can be paired down. I am not running much: nav lights, fish finder and some chargers probably. I will have a trolling motor eventually though. No, you’re not missing something. Just a ‘it’s my first boat’ guy and learning a lot!

Wiring my 14’ sea king from scratch….help!

I’m glad I’ve outlined the worst case and can pair down! Thank you for the advice. I am planning to have a trolling motor, but might not be right away, but may plan to expand to a two battery system. I’ve seen some people even say to just have a single house battery and just pull start every time!
