    Minimum compression

My neighbour knows I work on boat motors (Mercury) and he asked me to look at a 1969 Evinrude 9.5 that his father in law owns. He said it would run for a few seconds then stop. He had some shade tree look at it. They replaced the points and condenser (incorrectly gapped) and new plugs. They...

    Mercury KE4

This group mainly deals with newer motors, but I thought I would share an old motor I got last week to add to my collection. Its a 1948-1949 Mercury KE4 7.5HP. Fully restored and purrs like a kitten!

    Bench test rotation sensor?

I am wondering if you can bench test a rotation sensor for the oil injection system? I thought apply +12V to white wire, ground black wire. Insert + test prob on blue/white and - test prob on ground wire. You should be able to simulate the engine turning by using a strong magnet to the end of...

    Oil alarm on black max

On my `89 V-135 I am having problems with the alarm going off as soon as the engine starts (pulsing beep). I have checked the float in the upper oil tank and it is fine. No continuity to ground when float is up. I checked for voltage at the white wire going to the speed sensor at the pump...

    1989 Mercury 135

I am planning on looking at a boat with a 1989 Mercury 135 "blackmax" I have never been around these V6 outboards and know very little about them besides they or atleast the older ones share the same switchboxes and coils as my `80 115 inline six. I also assume this motor is oil injected. Is...

    Updating an `80 Merc 115 trim/tilt

My `80 115 has the older style two cylinder trim/tilt. I saw in a junk yard a newer 65HP Merc oil injected motor with the trim/tilt built into the transom assembly. Could I remove the powerhead/exhaust housing and use this trim/tilt on my motor? Thanks!

    Performance between a 165 and 888 Mercruiser

I am wondering if there would be any performance difference between a Mercruiser 165 (inline 6) and a Mercruiser 888 in a 19' closed bow deep V? The reason I ask is because my boat has a rotten transom from a leaking gimbal housing gasket, I gotta pull the engine anyway and thought about...

    greasing newly installed gimbal bearing

1974 Mercruiser MC1 165. I was installing my new gimbal bearing. Before installing I lined up the space in the tolerance ring with the hole in the outer race. I don't recall seeing if the hole in the outer race lined up with the hole in the bearing, I'm hoping it was, because its brand new...

    Starting from scratch Mercruiser 165

So I bought a new boat and it didn't come with a prop (stolen) and I'm in need of some sound advice on which one I should get. Boat: 1976 Aerocraft Browning Monte Carlo 19' closed bow, maybe around 2000 lbs? Not sure Drive: MC-1 Mercruiser 165 inline 6. Are one drive props the same as alpha...

    1980 GT-150 refurb

Re: 1980 GT-150 refurb Not a very productive weekend. I got up early and the power went off, great start to the day. I had some running around to do, get a hair cut, and get some lumber for the GT. I got back and it was still off. I figured I would mow the grass, once I was done, stil...

    1980 GT-150 refurb

Re: 1980 GT-150 refurb I made some progress today on the GT. I did some grinding on the transom and rear part of the hull. The transom needs more work and the whole hull needs a day of work yet. I made a decision about the stringers. I visited a local lumber yard and found some nice 1X6 fur...

    1980 GT-150 refurb

Re: 1980 GT-150 refurb I continued work today on the GT. I grabbed my circular saw, grinder, and pry bar and got to work. I removed all the old floor and the stringers. I removed the center stringer in one piece to use a pattern. Right now I have a whole bunch of grinding to do, not really...

    1980 GT-150 refurb

I put some of my other projects on hold (SSV-177) and decided to work on the GT and try to get it finished so I can use it this summer. I knew the boat had a weak transom and the floor wasn't right. It ended up the PO screwed down a piece of 3/4 over the existing floor, making the floor even...

Starting from scratch Mercury 115 Glastron SSV167

I've got a newly bought 1980 Glastron SSV-167 with a 1980 Mercury 115 with power trim. The motor didn't come with a prop and I'd like to get a good idea where to start. 16' v bottom boat, weights 850 lbs, 350 lbs motor, 500 to 800 lbs fuel, poeple, and gear. Roughly 1800 lbs. For a prop I'm...

    Eska spark plugs water pump

Seems like Eska's are pretty popular in this forum! I have a 1973 9.5 and I'm wondering what are the correct spark plugs for this engine? I was wondering if I could use the gap-less plugs my Mercury 7.5 uses? In my reseach is appears the impeller in my `75 Mercury 7.5 will fit the Eska? Thanks!

    1963 Mercury 850

Quick question, whats the difference between the 850 and 1000 engines? They're both the 90" engines, do the carbs make up the difference, or port sizes? Thanks!

`79 Glastron SSV-177 OMC to Mercruiser

Re: `79 Glastron SSV-177 OMC to Mercruiser Since the weather has taken a fall turn and the days are getting shorter, I have decided to move the boat inside for the winter. I'm still going to work on the boat this fall and winter, but the progress may be a bit slow. I have some other projects...

Re: `79 Glastron SSV-177 OMC to Mercruiser Holy cow where has the time gone??? Hopefully none of you thought I gave up on the project, it?s still going strong! I finally manage to lay down the last layer of fiberglass, a total of 3 layers, the old OMC hole is now a tad thicker than the...

`79 Glastron SSV-177 OMC to Mercruiser

Re: `79 Glastron SSV-177 OMC to Mercruiser As promised This is after the first layer of CSM was down, I grounded down a bit to remove some small air bubbles. After this I put some PB down on the transistion area, I then tried to put down 1708, couldn't get the air out, gave up. I grounded...
