BTW the lamp trick was extensively used in the Telco industry central offices..to prevent needless blow fuses when certain loads were exceeded ! old phones used 130 v 20 cycle power to ring the phonebells.....anytime a 20 cycle supply was shorted a fuse would have blown so using bulbs in series would just turn on bright instead of alarming the central office.
