I am running a 26" Prop on my Ranger 522 with a Ficht 250hp Evinrude and my backup prop is a 27. The best I can get is about 62 mph (GPS) at about 5500 rpm. BWB just did an article on the Z522 with a 250 Merc running a 25" Tempest Plus and it hit 69 mph. I am considering getting one as I have ran the tempest on other boats I have had and it performed well. I really don't know my WOT rating on this motor as I bought it used. Also I only have one gripe and that is that the motor dies a lot when you put it in gear, especially when it is first put in the water.

Any Thoughts on this and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Fred

Typically Rangers need props with a lot of bow lift. The Tempest is a good choice and the Turbo Lightning has as much or maybe a tad more lift. Top rpm on your DI will be around 5800. The 3.3's don't like much more.

A lot of your speed will depend on your gearcase. If you have the 250HO you should have the Lightning gearcase. If it's the standard 250 you'll probably have the standard gearcase. The Lightning gearcase is sleeker and you can run it a little higher (less drag).

What brand prop are you running now?

It is a standard 250 and I didn't mention the prop name because I don't see it anywhere. All it says is 14 1/2 x26 and 394756. I thought my spare was a 27 but it is the exact same prop I am running and other than the above numbers there is no name on it. I'm thinking it must be a low-end prop if it doesn't even have a name stamp.
As far as the turbo prop, are they still a welded prop or are they now forged. I threw a blade off a turbo when I had my Champion and there were no other marks on the prop. Makes me leary of welded props.

Those are OMC Raker props. Pretty decent props. The Turbo Lightnings are all one piece castings. Too bad you can't swing a 26, I know where a couple of them are.

I assume you have a jackplate, have you tried going up any?

I have a 6" jp (all ranger allows) and at about 3/4 trim on the gauge by myself I am roostering at the top of the cowling. Two people and I need to trim a bit more. Without low water pickups I am a bit leery of going too high. I might have a bit of room left but the high roostertail at full trim seems to suggest otherwise.
I went on the Turbo site and saw that they are indeed one piece forged but they don't appear to be ventilated. I like the adjustable venting on the Tempest because the 522 has a BIG *** that needs to get lifted.
Your thoughts on this?

The Lightnings are vented and you can have them enlarged to the PVS holes if you like. Sounds like the height is about right for the prop you have. I can send you a pic if you give me your email.
