How does the ignition work on this motor?

I know how most outboards work:

Stator produces electrical current. Switch box (or power pack etc.) in combination with a flywheel trigger decides voltage sent to a particular coil for appropriate firing of spark plub.

Now on my motor, there appears to be now swich box and the coils are known as 'CDM' which I'm assuming stands for Capacitor Discharge Module of which one of mine went bad.

Dealer said that sometimes when one goes bad, it impacts the performance of the others and even if you replace it, engine will not fire on all three cylinders.

It would be great if someone could explain how this works...

Tx.

Joe

They're independant for the most part, but current goes thru them basically in pairs. The one that isn't firing is the ground path for the one that is. In other words, the one that is firing could be the problem for the one that isn't. As far as one causing the other to fail, not quite true. It could be preventing the mate from firing, but that doesn't damage it. They don't have to be replaced in pairs.

Willy:

So the signal from the trigger (at the flywheel) then does not go to a swichbox? There is no switch box?

When the trigger sends the signal to the coil, do two fire?

Tx.

Joe
