My new rig has VRO but came with no remote oil tank. Some prior owner just blocked off the oil line at the fuel connector and started mixing with a understandably poor outcome. The guy I bought it from said He could never keep it running.:) I've established the VRO pump is shot, the fuel pump section doesn't even work. I bought a pre '83 fuel pump(part#395713) and am in the process of doing a "Retro" pre-mix reconfiguration, VRO pump removal and carb service today. Questions; What are the wire colors for the remote oil tank connection that needs to be disconnected under the engine cover? Below the lower carb on the intake manifold next to the VRO pulse port there is a brass nipple with a hose just laying there not connected to anything. Does this nipple get blocked off just like the VRO pump pulse port?

Thanks for any help, Larry

I realize you've installed the normal small fuel pump... the following gives you a general idea of what needs to be done as far as disconnecting various items.

The oil tank wires (2) look like ordinary household black lamp cord wires.

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup (and fuel restriction warning if so equipped) by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quantity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

The only duplex plug with 12 gauge wire are the blue/green for the PT@T. Any other ideas? Should I plug the brass nipple under the lower carb or does it connect to something?

Any idea of a web based location for a wiring schematic for this unit? It's a J50PL STD.

Edit/Update. Found the spot on the breather where the nipple connects to.:embarassed: Still trying to find where the oil tank wires connect under the hood.

You say that there's no oil tank there. I would think that you could safely assume that the wires have been removed. One wire would attach to a powerhead ground somewhere, the other wire would attach to a TAN wire usually just the other side of that large RED electrical plug.

Thanks Joe. Some prior owner that ditched the oil tank and just started mixing left the quad plug connected to the VRO so I don't think he knew what he was doing.

Any idea of a ball park figure of the number of turns out from seating for the idle jets?
