I recently bought a new Yamaha 25HP four stroke, it was sold to me as a '05 but when I got it home the sticker on the side plate says 04/04 or something to that effect, does that date mean anything? Is there a way to verify it is an '05 and not an '04? Thanks for any infomation.

same as most cars, the first production runs of the current model year were usually produced in the last model year. its not like they design and manufacture these things in a day.
its quite possible to have the 05 year model actually assembled in 04, goes for most large equipment.

Re: '04 or '05 Yamaha?

Found this on another site, guess I answered my own question,

Yamaha Model Numbers, Deciphered

Model:

C=C Series
F=Four Stroke
T=Four Stroke with High Thrust

NOTE: Models listed without a "C" "F" or "T" letter are 2 stroke.

Horsepower:

ex: 50, 115, 200, etc.

Trim/Tilt/Start:

T= Power Trim&Tilt with electric start
P= Power tilt with electric start
E= Manual tilt with electric start
M= Manual Tilt with manual start

Shaft Length:

S= 15"
L= 20"
X= 25"
U= 30"

Control Type:

R= Remote Control
H= Tiller Handle

Model Year:

U-1996
V-1997
W-1998
X-1999
Y-2000
Z-2001
A-2002
B-2003
C-2004
D-2005

For example, "F115TLRX" would be a 4-stroke, 115 HP, power trim/tilt w/ electric start, 20" shaft, remote control (non tiller), 1999 model.

be aware that the D designator actually shows up twice.

so far the only four stroke designators are F or T. an L prefix will also indicate a left hand gearcase.
C series normaly indicates a two stroke non oil injected for commercial applications.
most the time with yamaha the model # will identify the motor. the yamaha software can also ID the motor by the primary ID(seriel#).
