I have 90hrs on my 2004 220CS and I bought it with 70hrs on it a few months ago. It's always been a little louder when turning, but recently it has got a lot louder (grinding noise) and vibrating now. It only vibrates and makes noise when in gear and turning. Does anyone have any ideas where to start looking to get this figured out? Thanks

Pull the outdrive, sound like the ujoint are bad. Possibly due to water in the bellows.

Does it grind when turning left, right, or both?

I wonder about a bad gimble bearing.

Both left and right only in gear and when straight when I try and trim it up about 1/4 way up

Is there a procedure for checking the gimble?

Don S. has posted the factory mnauals here.

Pull the drive right away, if a Ujoint fails they can take lots of expensive parts out with them.

Here is the link to the manual for your outdrive.
http://www.4shared.com/file/50982625/e2bdb42c/SX_DP-S_Service_Manual.html

To check the gimbal bearing, after you pull the drive, reach in and turn it. It should be smooth turning. No roughness at all.
If there is water in the bellows, you need new gimbal bearing and ujoints, along with a new bellows,

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to take a look at the manual and give it a try.

Pulling the drive is not that bad of a job if you have basic mechanical applitude and a good thing to learn IMO. You should pull it about once a year to lookie in there anyhow.

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to take a look at the manual and give it a try.

can it be pulled without the outdrive dolly? If so does anyone have any tips or plans on a homemade device to get her done?

Yes, you can pull it w/o dolly. I have pulled mine off numerous times by myself and I am not a huge guy. I raise and lower the boat with jack to get height right for reinstalling the drive and sit the skeg on a piece of plywood.

Re: 04 Vol SX Outdrive Stuck with rusted gimble and joints

OK, I made me a stand out of scrap wood with some rollers from home depot. I do have a hole in my bellow and I have rusted up joints and gimble bearing. Tried to remove it but only was able to work it out about 3/4inch and it will not budge anymore. I have tried everything posted on here: lifting and dropping it, shaking it, hooked it up my my lawn tracktor with racheting straps, and reconnect the trim rams w/ it braced against the trans w/2x4s. Is there anything else I can try to get the outdrive off?

Your problem is that the drive shaft is probably corroded into the gimbal bearing because of the water in there. Its going to take some working back and forth.

Re: 04 Vol SX w/90hrs Loud Grinding Noise when Turning in Gear Only

I finally got it off, I had to strap the bottom of the foot to the trailer, and brace the top so it couldn't go anywhere but out. I have my 7 yr old boy work the trim while I watched and prayed the brace wouldn't break thur the boat. The gimble bearing came out with it and would not come off the drive shaft. I ordered with whole drive shaft with u-joints from marine parts express for 350 bucks. Thanks for all the help on here.

You do realize, that this is a bigger problem than just the ujoint shaft, and 350 bucks sounds way cheap for that setup. What about the bellows? Water is what caused your problem, what about the gimbal bearing, front seal in the drive, thrust sleeve, new screw for the end of the ujoint assembly, setting rolling torque, alignment. Have you thought about any of that?

Yes, 350 was just the shafts and u-joints, I ordered the other parts as well and I got a marine mec coming over to do the alignment and install.
