05 Maxum 1800 SR3 Speedo Problem

My Maxums Speedo works but every once in awhile it will just stop working. Any ideas what it could be? Is this a normal thing? If you could give me an idea of what to check for id greatly appreciate it!

The mostly inaccurate readings come from a pic up tube on the stern, usually white. They work by measuring the force of water forced into the tube. Often a little dirt will be picked up and lodged in the pick up or tube. Most of the time the pick up (easy) and tube can be cleaned-- a cheap replacement but often running a new tube is the pain. If you are not doing it yourself it may be less expense to buy a GPS and get accurate readings.

I doubt that. His boat should have an alpha one and the speedo pickup hole is in the leading edge of the lower unit. Same advice applies for cleaning it out, also check the hose connection in the front of the drive where the upper and lower come together - that is the speedo pickup tube.
