I have an '05 F115 whose pickup for the speedometer seems to be messed up some how. I was running the boat after installing the Mobster Tabs and was comparing the speedo to the gps speeds and noticed that the speedo stopped registering about halfway through our outing. When I first noticed it, it was stuck on 40 mph while I was just easing by a fellow fisherman. I saw it and figured maybe some underwater debris might have gotten caught against the lower unit. I stopped, backed down hard in an attempt to clear the debris but nothing changed. The speedo continued to be in operable so I just ignored it during our outing. When trailering the boat and readying it for the trip home, I noticed the speedo had dropped down to 30. When I get home, I now see the speedo is down to about 10 mph and is hanging there. After flushing the motor, I tried spraying some water into the very small pickup hole on the lower unit but nothing changed.

How do I go about clearing the obstruction from the pickup hole if that's the problem? Do I just stick a push pin or small drill bit in the hole? I thought about that but was afraid to damage anything that might be inside. I would appreciate someone giving me some insight as how to fix this little annoying problem. Thanks.

Re: '05 Yamaha F115 Speedo Problem

The same thing happened to my f150. I used a small drill bit (by hand only) and kept twisting slowly untill all the debris was removed from the pickup port. in my case it was felt or thread from a towel or something like that. It is a very small hole and I could not understand how it got in there, but it did! do not use compressed air because you could blow off the plastic tube at the connection inside the lower unit requiring disassembly. good luck
