Hey there,

Anyone here with a Vista 318 experiencing a slight gas smell in the cabin? It becomes worse if we turn any fans or the AC. We tried sleeping on the boat on Saturday (1st time) and ended up having to leave at 02:00 in the morning because the smell was just too much to take.

Looking at where the tanks are located , they are not easily accessible to inspect. When I open the engine hatch, there is the typical engine smell, but nothing too bad that would indicate a fuel leak on the engines.

if you smell gas there is gas somewhere. the fuel system is a closed system. except the fill, vent and carbs. there should be no fuel smell. Unless someone was very sloppy filling the tank, and all spilt fuel should have gone overboard.

I would find the vent line and try to trace it back to the tank(s). I wonder if there is a leak in a fitting or something. There is a leak somewhere. I wouldn't use the boat again until you find it and fix it.

If it has a plastic fuel tank  There are fuel permeability issues in plastic tanks that cause smells

"Why is EPA regulating marine fuel systems?
We analyzed evaporative emissions from gasoline fuel tanks used in
boats and determined that they emit over 100,000 tons of gasoline
vapors each year across the United States. Most of these emissions occur
either from permeation of the fuel through plastic fuel tanks and rubber
hoses, or as a result of heating of the fuel from normal daily temperature
changes (diurnal emissions). These vapors contribute to the formation of
smog and contain toxic compounds such as benzene."

Did you ever solve the probelm? We have an 06 318 vista cruiser with the same probelm.
