I have an 06 Sea Ray 185 I bought used last month and know very little of its history or manners. To the point, She won't crank. It started acting up last week end acting dicey when cranking. Its in neutral, I had the battery checked, I've checked connections, I hear a distinct click at the starter but no go,it won't even turn over. The tilt/ trim works fine and the engine runs strong that is if you could get it to crank. Where to begin. Thanks Brew

Sounds like a solenoid problem or just a loose connection from the starter.

It was, the one attached to the top of the mounting plate. Don told me hold to track it down. Easy to get to but quirky removal. 7/16 bolts just spin.

You need to remove the bracket to gain access to the nuts. DO NOT dissassemble the solenoid as you PMed me about. That will probably ruin your new solenoid.

Got ya, I would not mess with the new as it looks as if sealed anyway. So the mounting bracket has those star bolts? special socket? remove bracket and proceed? I only see three, am I looking at the right animal?

Also two of the star bolts look as if they are also holding on a transformer looking assembly to the plate, and on up in the direction of the bow with a secondary bracket attached. i can see that this must be removed but I just wanted a ok doky before I cause myself extra work. Brew

I don't have an 06 in front of me, but if you take a picture of the bolts and brackets, I'm sure someone here can help you.

Re: 06 Mercruiser 3.0 gas

Looking at the bolts and bracket it self it is apparent it is indeed held on by at least 3 bolts on a at least 10 spline star configeration type bolt head. Most all of the atachments to the mounting plate look as if they can be moved away from the block without disasembly. I'll see if I can locate this wierd socket for removal. why didn't the enginers just use self tapping/tighting screws for a bracket that is so often replaced? At least I will learn my motor by this excercise, and having you all here as a back up speaks volumes as to the value of you all and this forum. My wife is not much help, Ha! but she is a good wife. I'll get back! off to the store!.

Re: 06 Mercruiser 3.0 gas

you will need a 3/8's 12 point socket for those bolts

Re: 06 Mercruiser 3.0 gas

Success! Fixed and easy crank! It turns out I had the 12 point sockets in my tool box all the time. I had just never seen a 12 point bolt! Apparently a very standard type socket. In front of my face but blind to what I was looking at. Indeed the Mounting Plate on my 06' 3.0l Mercruser is afaced to the block by 3, 12 pt, 3/8th bolts. I removed two of them and left the one below the transformer (?) attached but very loose for easy reassembly/alignment, but just enough to hold the plate away from the block. I was able to pull away mounting plate for enough room, without disconecting any other parts to access the nuts to the solenoid mount on the back of the plate. It is not necessary to remove the mounting plate completely if you have a pair of long nose vice grips. I held the behind nuts for the solenoid bracket steady with the long nose vise grip pliers. If you use a wrench to hold the nuts, as you take the bolts from the nut, the nut would probally fall free into the bildge. The bolt free, you have your nut secure at the tip of your vice grips. On reassembly with the nut held securely at the end of your pliers, you may attempt many line ups to the thread bolt with out dropping the little nut. Thankfully the bolts threaded easily, first try. Upon intial finger threading the bolt to the nut, you may use you 7/16 standard socket ratchet to tighten it back up leaving the vice grips attached to prevent spinning. Now tight, hit the release to remove your long nose vice grip. Now you can rethread your other two 12 point bolts and put the whole mount plate back flush. One note. Watch out for the cotter pins on the throttle assembley that are not fully bent back. The free ends are very sharp and the equivelent of hypo needles. A painful 3 corner hole at the base of my thumb blead like a stuck hog. Thank you again for all the help. Brew
