'08 20hp Tohatsu and '01 15hp Yamaha, Same?

I have both these four stroke motors and the powerheads on both of these look identical. Are the Nissan/Tohastu motors copies of the 15hp Yamahas? The Yamahas were redesigned (I think) in 2006 so did Yamaha sell the design to Tohatsu? Can you change the 15hp Yamaha to a 20hp by swapping in some Tohatsu parts?

That is an interesting question. I bought a new T9.9 Yamaha and thought it really looked like a Tohatsu. Maybe they are making them for Yamaha??

So a Tohatsu is a Nissan which is a Merc and can be a Yamaha. It's hard to know what you own these days.

Nothing in common with a Yamaha. The Tohatsu basic design came out before the Yamaha.

I'll take some pictures for you. The intake, carb, air intake box, and even the shift controls look the same. I actually had a problem with my oil sending unit on the Tohatsu and checked the Yamaha's against it and it was the same sensor in the same location.

As I said, nothing in common with a Yamaha. That does not mean that some part off of one brand of engine will not fit on another. The Japanese vend parts from outside suppliers and it is not unusual for part x on brand z to be the same as part x on brand y. There are only so many ways to do something The original question was about one being a copy of another and the answer to that is a definitive no.

Okay I guess I should have started the thead "are parts interchangeable from a Yamaha 15hp and a Tohatsu 20hp". I am pretty sure I could take the manifold off the Tohatsu 20 and bolt it right on the 15 carb and all. What I did notice was that the carb from the 20 has a bigger bore so my thinking was to get a 20 Tohatsu carb and intake and gain an extra 5hp. The Tohatsu I have is brand new so I won't play with it untill it's off warranty. I'll post some pics when I get some time.

The blue motor is the '08 20hp Tohatsu and the grey is the '01 15hp Yamaha. From the pictures you can see the carbs, intake, and oil dipstick location is similar. Hard to see in the pictures but the shift linkage is identical.

On the left side of the motors you can see the oil filter is in the same spot. The oil fill is identical and the motors look very similar. It's hard to see the motor shape on the Tohatsu because of the starter, coil, starter relay and ignition module. The starter mounting locations look so similar that I'm sure I could bolt it to the Yamaha.

The plug wires are disconnected from the Tohatsu because I just finished winterizing.
