What I mean is by traditional choke is a carb with a traditional choke plate. This late model carb seems to have some sort of solenoid acting as the choke.

Anyway, the saga continues. I picked up the kit yesterday and all the gaskets were wrong. Having trouble sourcing a kit for a reasonable price and that will be here in a reasonable time.

You may have the TKS TurnKeyStart carb, unique for MerCruiser engines. Those have an electrically assisted pressurized fuel circuit in the carb for starting and warmup without needing to move the throttle. Emulates fuel injected engine start procedure (no throttle).

Cool, thanks for the info. All diagrams and choke adjustment procedures I looked at mentioned nothing of the sort ('cause they're old). Is there a way to check that this solenoid is working correctly? I figure if I take it off and just hook it up to a battery, something ought to happen, right? (Will either open or close, which should produce at a minimum some sort of sound, if not any visible action). I tried rigging it to a battery to see if it was operational, but did not hear or see any evidence that it does work.

I have finally located the right carb kit, hopefully gonna get it done this weekend.
I have a few other questions. When disassembling the carb, there was some sand (or sand looking particles) in both the carb and in the second fuel filter. I want to have a look inside the tank (to look if I need to clean it), but cannot figure out how to get the pickup out so I can look through the whole.

When I undo the nut holding the pickup, the pickup is still stuck in the hole and if I try and yank it out, the tank just flexes with the pickup. I don't want to break the tank near the pickup. Any tips to get it loose? I'll snap some pics tomorrow morning when the weather clears up.

So to conclude this thread, after rebuilding carb she's running fine. I bought a kit and used it all, but just a cleaning and new gaskets would have sufficed.
