Just bought an older 18 hp Evinrude, not sure of the year? Serial # 18002E-E08385.
I can get it started - to be honest I am not sure how many times to prime and how many times to choke?
It runs at a high idle for a few minutes and then pops every so often until when it pops it kills it.
I pulled the plugs and cleaned them several times, I tried new plugs. The same thing happens.
One of the plugs had a dry charcoal look to it, the other one was clear and wet?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Hello rycasl
Your motor is a 1970 model. The starting procedure is, Shift to neutral, set throtle to start, pull choke on, vent tank, squeeze primer bulb until hard. The pull starter rope until engine fires (pops or starts). push choke in (off). It shouldn't take more than three pulls to get a pop (cold engine). I don't know the circomstances of your purchess, but I guessing this motor probably needs serviced. I suggest you start with a compression test. This will tell you if your motor can be tuned-up with out major repairs. I also suggest that you obtain a manual for your motor. This will save you a lot of head aches and money.

If you have a clear wet plug it probably has no spark on that cylinder.
If you are going to do your own repairs.Do as alcan says. A manual is a must.
