1 1-16 nut under my impeller?

Hey there fellow boaters, got a good one for ya. So vie removed the lower drive from the 1990 120hp force I got and am going through the replacement steps for the impeller, but then dun dun dun- a hiccup. or burp, i dunno. Anyways since the impeller wouldn?t budge from the shaft after cleaning around the shaft and lubing well i began investigating. I removed all rubber from impeller to find a 1 1-16 size nut underneath! The new impeller doesn?t have a nut only a metal sleeve with a grove for a key way. The mercury repair manual doesn?t say anything about it being any different either.
I?ve called 2 different mercury marinas and both say it should slide up off, with some persuasion. Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: 1 1-16 nut under my impeller?

That is so odd that I for one would like to see a photo. Every lower I have seen is as described by the dealer: A flat in the shaft and a groove in the impeller into which a special pin fits.

Earlier lower units had a key that fit into a square groove, but none ever screwed on. And, 1 1/16 is larger than the hub of the stock impeller.

Describe the impeller: Did it have six vanes with rounded tips? Or, was it different? perhaps the P.O. was too lazy to get a stock impeller and substituted what he had.

Upload the photo to any site on your computer. I keep mine on an SD card. I just pull the card out of the camera and plug into the port. That way I don't need to upload. At the end of the post, scroll down to manage attachments. If it is not there, click out and then click in and edit. again, scroll to manage attachments. on the window that comes up click on add photo.click on browse. find the photo you want and attach it. now click on upload. If it has not already been attached, clikk and drag it to the lower portion of the window. Now there will be a notice in the lower right one photo attach online. click on attach online. It will automatically be attached to your post. really very easy, it sounds way more complicated than it is.

This is the sleeve that resembles a 1 1-16 nut with a slice on the inside to utilize the odd shaped key. Sorry about the crappy pic but cant get too close cause the flash is intense. It threw me off at first, and after stripping off impeller vanes you can see why.

Here is the sleeve after i used a 3 jaw puller to slide it up and off. Notice the odd shaped key in the flat spot on the shaft.

Thanks Frank, the up loading instructions were spot on. :)

Rover, I sent some original pics from my phone to your email.

How did it go. Does the new impeller fit OK?

That nut looks to just be the intenal section of the impeller.

And the new one should just slip on..

Cheers.

hey rover, it went great. After cleaning shaft the new one slid right on. It was infact just the sleeve that they attached the rubber vains. now to continue cleaning sand from motors nooks and crannies. Till i get stumped again.... Regards all
