1 cylinder not firing 1998 Evinrude 200

Compression good, carbs rebuilt, 150 original hrs. Using a spark tester, I found the center cylinder, port side had a weak intermittant spark. Result was loss of RPM at mid to wide open throttle. I replaced the coil and since that did not fix it, I replaced the power pack. That didn't fix it either. I put the power pack lead (that goes to the misfiring cylinder) to a known good coil and got the same intermittant weak spark result. I guess that tells me the problem is upstream of the power pack and has to do with the circuit going to the port center cylinder. My troubleshooting manual does not seem to help. Any ideas?

while your throwing parts at it toss a trigger on it to. the only other way to test is with a CD-77 meter or its eqivalent. its rather common to see one not spark at cranking speeds. but if you have replaced the pack and the flywheel mags are all still in place next step is a trigger check. do you have a CD-77 and a manual ?

Nope, don't have a CD-77. That must be some kind of voltage checking device I suppose. It seems I can either call in an expert that has all the right tools, buy the tools, or throw another part at it (assuming I can get the flywheel off). My question to the forum is: What is the most likely problem that would affect just one cylinder. I assume from the response above, it is the trigger (Is this the same thing as Timer Base?). The other 2 possibilities seem to be Stator or Rectifier Regulator. Are either of these possibilities or, if they went bad, would they likely affect more than 1 cyl?

Answered one of my own questions. Trigger is same as sensor coil. I think I decided, since I have twin engines and since the part is not cheap, to swap triggers to see if the problem swaps also. Does anyone know what size socket I need for the flywheel nut? is there a best way to hold the flywheel stationary if I don't have the tool made for doing that?

hello
the socket size is 1 7/16"ths.
snapon makes a nice holding/turning tool for about 69 dollars. larger sears stores and some napa stores carry them as well.

Was able to borrow a holding tool and Sears had a great selection of big sockets. The problem was that the flywheel nut is down in a hole and you need a thin walled socket to get close to it. Luckily, they had a 36MM socket that was thin walled. Posting this in case anyone has a similar situation. Bottom line, got the flywheel, Stator and Timer Baseswapped with those on the other engine. Now the port engine has the problem of one cyl not firing. Ordered a new Timer Base last night.

OK, I am installing a new timer base tonight on the bad engine. Do I need to do anything else before running the engine, like do a timing check?

To finish this link, the local mechanic said if no adjustments were made to the timer base linkage, I don't have to check timing. Ran boat today. Runs good now. Note: Remember to put the blue and yellow wire from the powere pack to the top coil, not the shortest!
