what tells you its a 175gt?

It a old 2.6L bigbore crossflow 175...pre 1990, most likely a 88-89 year.

It's at least an 89, as that was the first year for the single power pack. Normally the head part number is helpful, but the head part number listed is not really a head part number. Maybe the head cover p/n... That engine is a big bore 160 cubic inch crossflow. The factory de-tuned the earlier 235 and called it a 175. That's what this is. It's a high torque performance engine for sure. You can tell by the letter "S" after the 150 in the model number" 150S. All the GT and XP engines made about 10% more hp than the badge on the side (175). So, likely it really puts out close to 192 hp. It's considered a "high port" block and will make strong hp right up to 6000. What is interesting is that the midsection appears to be painted 1976 200 gold. But it can't be a 76 mid, as they never made a bubble back exhaust in 1976. Maybe the P.O. just liked the color...

Set the height at 22-1/16" or 27-1/16"

i have a long rig so 22-1/16 would be 56cm but from the hole to where should i messure is there a picture that shows how?
but what if my engine is 1991? ith shuld be shorter then right?

i only wanted to know before i put it back together so i can check everything. but before i changed the waterpump my reverse would not work. tried to adjust and then my forward would not work. havent worked on these engines before but my mariner/mercury 25 does not need much adjustment to get the gears to work.
almopst feels like my wire doesent move enough or is it tricky to adjust it? maby worn out in the gearhousing. incrase stroke by modding shift lever?

Did you measure the height as removed ?------Believe it or not cables wear out internally and results in not enuff travel.----Remove cable at the motor and try to push / pull that shift cable there should be very little slack.-----There should be no need to use a hacksaw to start modifying anything.
