1 yard front end loader question

When they say "1 yard bucket" on a front end loader, that's 1 yard when the material is level in the bucket, right?

I just got some mulch, and the buckets they were giving me were heaping full which was nice, if they were giving me extra.

I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out how much mulch I put down so I know how much to ask for next time! :)

Thanks!

Thats correct. The guy gave you 1 1/2 yards or about that.

Thanks. I know that must have sounded like a stupid question.

I used about 8 yards of mulch, all said and done.

A 1 yard bucket would be measured as if it was full of water. Heaped up adds to what you got except..... it depends on compaction of the mulch. Mulch tends to "fluff" and settles when put down.

Like a bale of hay..... seems compact until it is cut open and spread out.

We used to say that a body or bucket was *cy struck which was to say if you "strike" it off with a straight edge from side to side and front to rear that that was the volume that would be measured. To say "water level" is correct.Ron G

That would depend on the bucket. It could be that the bucket they used was 1 yard when heaped. I'm sure they wouldn't be giving away an extra half yard with every load.

Unless the guy who loaded you was the owner of the company, what does he care. Quicker and easier for him to just give you a heaping full bucket. The place I go to uses 2yrd buckets if I ask for 2yrd the guy fills the back of my truck up, plus mounds it about 2 feet.

I usually get more than a yd3 when I go as well....they want to make sure you don't complain about the bucket being full so they always end up throwing an extra couple of wheel barrows worth in it seems.
Always works out to the positive. What I can't get is the folks who 'buy it by the bag'....thats an expensive way to buy dirt. However if you don't need too much I suppose...hmmm.
All Good.:)

I can't quite imagine someone putting a bucket of steaming mulch into the back of their Honda Accord.:D I believe that is where the bags come into play.
