10 hp can't get running

Well I did solve my cracked cly 1959 qd 20 Johnson problem by getting a new powerhead with good compression. I rebuilt the carb, new impeller, new spark plugs, points, coils......

I tried to get her fired up today with no success. I did give myself two blisters between both my middle fingers which sucks oh well it would have been worth it had it fired up.

It has spark, compression, and it appears fuel is getting to the cyl. It did back fire once that was about it, other than I did put a little fuel in the clys and it sputtered once.

Where do I start I took a look at the points again and from what I can tell they are correct of course I have never set them before.

Any help on what to do?
Thanks
Ben

Re: 10 hp can't get running

First thoughts::
Plug wires on the wrong cylinder,Partially sheared flywheel key, points set wrong,Be sure the point are on the high point of the cam.set at .020.Did the plugs look wet?I believe there is a boss on the stator plate that the coils should line up with.New plug wires wouldn't hurt.Use solid core wires.
Check the spark, should jump 1/4 inch nice blue snappy spark.Let us know what you find.

They are new plug wires and boots. How do I know which plug wire goes on which cly? There is spark I am not sure maybe it is not strong enough but it is hard to turn the motor and hold the spark plug and watch for spark.

Re: 10 hp can't get running

I tested the spark again this morning and it looks good to me. I still could not get the engine to fire:devil: How far off would the timing have to be for it not to run?

by the way i have the air box off and with the choke on after several pulls fuel pools at the front of the carb? Maybe that has something to do with it?
thanks

Re: 10 hp can't get running

Go to the Engine FAQs, bbenkaz.

Do the troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

Re: 10 hp can't get running

Ok here is what I did

Removed carb put fuel in the intake and the motor fired up for a couple seconds. So I think either something is wrong with the carb or it does not seem like the intake pressure is very strong. I held up a thin plastic baggie and cracked the motor and it pulls the baggie but not real strong maybe that is normal.

I think the new carb needle I put in seemed a little sticky but I just figured it was because it was dry. I have never rebuilt a carb before.

I tried reinstalling the carb and putting fuel in again and starting but no luck. I removed the carb and put fuel in as before and the motor did not run but sounded as if it were trying probably hard to start a motor with no carb on.

Thanks for your help it is very apprecitated

Re: 10 hp can't get running

I have the same engine and 2 '58's and a '57. something to try is to make some premix fuel and oil in a spray bottle and use it to spray into the carb to eliminate the carb. You can use quick start but you must spray in oil at the same time if you do otherwise no lubrication. I spray in fogging oil at the same time I use quick start if I dont have any premix. And yes, it will fire up with no carb on it if you spray the premix in it but it will run away on you as there's nothing to control the speed but at least you will know the issue. And make sure the spark jump's a quarter inch. Use a helper if need to be test the spark or get a cheapo tester.

Got it running. The timing was retarding when I pulled the starter it think maybe the coils are rubbing the flywheel. I will take the flywheel off and adjust them but it does run now just a matter a fine tuning. Thanks everybody.
