I have a 10 hp that won't idle,if you put it gear and open thottle it will run.I try to put it back to shift to take it out of gear and it won't idle.It seems to run rich.Had carb off to check, looked real clean.Cleaned it real good, blew it out.Put it back on ,same result. Thanks for your time, please help.

If adjusting it won't fix the idle then you need to rebuild the carb. Assuming you have good compression on the motor

I checked compression, got 40# per hole.Far as adjustment I can only do the top one,I've been told that it is a fixxed high idle motor.I'm guessing that the top one is for idle mixture,is there a rule of thumb on how many turn out it should be?It also has a little bracket under the idle adjustment that only lets you go so far each way. Thanks for your input.

40 # per hole? Are you sure you tested it properly? As that's too low to run properly.

I have a compression tester that you just hold in against the hole,I held it in while my grandson pulled the rope, each clyinder came out equal even so I assumed it was right.Didn't hear any blow bye.Do know what it should have?I still have some doubt about the idle mixture adjustment. When I had it apart to clean the carb,I loosened up the nut and unscrewed all of it till it came out.Didn't look dirty, sprayed it out ,blew it out,put it back in till it was in place with the bracket that limits complete revolution. Not sure of how many turns out it should be to start. But thought the bracket should be a good indication. Thanks for the help.

Well, don't worry about the compression until you get a screw-in type. I'm thinking about 80 or 85 lbs. on a well-used but good one, 90 on a GREAT one.
Your problem is likely your idle adjustment. Take the knob off. Screw it all the way in slowly until you lightly seat it (it's very sharp on the end in order to do its job and tightening it too tight will ruin the tip). Then loosen it about 1 1/2 turns. crank it up and tighten it about 1/8 of a turn at a time pausing in between turns to let the motor catch up. As you turn it counterclockwise, you will eventually hear the motor start to speed up as you lean out the mixture. If you go too far, it will start to "lean sneeze" if your carb is clean. Back it off about an 1/8th of a turn or until it smooths back out. It should idle good. If turning the idle screw doesn't have an affect on it, then you probably got a piece of packing in the jet when you screwed the needle back in or the carb is not clean. In the FAQ's section of the forum, Joe Reeves (an expert) posted his carb setting method which is flawless and may be easier to understand. I believe it's the third thread from the bottom. Don't forget to tighten the adjusting nut with a 7/16 inch end wrench so the needle won't loosen up and ruin your adjustment when it's running. You should tighten it until it squeezes the packing down on the needle enough to make it where it won't turn unless YOU turn it. If you tighten the nut all the way to the carb face before it starts to bind up the needle like it's supposed to, then you need more packing. Once you get it set right, THEN put the knob back on.
Good luck,
JBJ

Just wanted to mention that when I said "crank it up" after the 1 1/2 turns, I meant crank up the motor. I'm sure you knew that but it looked a little unclear when I read it the third time.:)

.... As you turn it counterclockwise, you will eventually hear the motor start to speed up as you lean out the mixture.

Not to nit pick, but you'll be adjusting the needle valve clockwise , not counterclockwise to lean out the mixture.....

I wouldn't worry about the idle (or anything else) until you verify the compression. As JBJ said, get a good screw in gauge and pull it hard and strong 4-5 times or so or until you get the highest reading... About 75#'s per hole is pretty much the lowest it will run well with.

I agree get a screw in compression tester and check it again. If it is 40 per cylinder which I doubt you will never get it to idle or run right.

Thanks for all the help, wasn't sure what I should have for compression.I'll get a screw in model, should have one anyways.I did read the carb adjustment page by Joe Reeve's,very helpful.I did notice the packing on the needle,is it the packing behind the aluminum piece? It seemed worn also,it time for a rebuild kit. Thanks again.
