10 HP Johnson Impeller Replaced

After installing a new impeller on a 1980 9.9 HP Johnson, I started it and let it run for about 5 seconds - no water spurt! Then turned it off.

I am going to take it apart again tomorrow. Any suggestions as to what i did wrong? Its the first time I replaced an impeller - followed the SELOC manual isntructions and the Leroy Wisner tutorial from this website. Everything seemed to be in place.

Will appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

Did make SURE the impeller drive pin was installed right?​

Are you running it in a bucket? It needs to be deep enough for the pump to be submerged

You might make sure your tell tale isn't clogged (blow it out with compressed air).

Also 5 seconds probably isn't long enough run time.You can run for over a minute with out doing any engine overheat damage.

Thanks to everyone. Those are good suggestions. I'll have to admit that I was not positive the pin was securely in place against the drive shaft. The housing witht the impeller in place seemed to fit over the pin just right, but it could have slipped sideways. guess i'll see that when I take it down again.

Yes, i was testing it in a large garbage can and it was submerged sufficiently to cover the water intake.

Also, thanks for the avice on running a bit longer - i was tempted to let it run for about 30 seconds but had heard rumors that the impeller could be damaged after only about 5-10 seconds. makes it hard to evaluate in that little time.

Thanks again for all the advice - I will get into it tonight after filing income taxes.

Yes, the impeller can be damaged in 10-15 seconds , IF RUN DRY....it's a friction thing....since you have the lower unit properly submerged in a barrel, this shouldn't be a problem.

It sounds like you didn't run it long enough. Your concern about ruining the impeller isn't really valid since they say not to run outboards without water (which is what ruins the impeller) and you know for a fact you have water. It's just not peeing.

My tell-tale was clogged with salt residue and I took it apart and ran a weedeater line and paper clip through it and it fixed it right up. The impeller pin sits pretty tight in there so it's unlikely it slipped out or you wouldn't have been able to get everything back together.

If you still can't get it to pee here are some quicker suggestions to determine if it's pumping without removing the lower unit again.

1. Remove the tell-tale hose from the connection on the powerhead. Sure it'll squirt water all over but it's fresh water and it's just a test. If it works the pretty much points to a clogged tell-tale somewhere after that.
2. Remove a thermostat and see if water runs out the top of the motor.
