Mix it 100:1 and add a splash more, I always use a couple extra tablespoons of oil just because, you don't have to jump right to 50:1, doubling up on oil is kind of extreme but just a bit more will give you a little more oil but not enough to cause a problem, call it 90:1

i would personally go with 50:1, and a bit of seafoam (75:1 at bare minimum)........but if you're going with 100:1,add the splash more oil for peace of mind.

I think I have read somewhere on this board that outboard Mfg's engineers knew what they were doing ... does that include Yamaha's ..LOL Now seriously if Yamaha recommends 100:1 mix ratio I would presume it would be using THEIR 2 cycle oil ??

In reallity there are very few places that make oil so say Pennzoil will make and rebrand oil for 10 different companies, the formulations may be a bit different but it is still Pennzoil, I believe thay make the Super Tech that Wal Mart selss which alot of people on here use with absolutely no problem.

I run the Super Tech or if I am in a hurry and out of oil I will use the 7-11 brand which here again is made by somone else and put in a 7-11 bottle, as long as it says it meets TCW-3 standards it is fine so you can pay 40 bucks a gallon or 13 but it is pretty much the same oil.

And I run an '81 Evinrude 50, if I had a brand new 250 something I might be tempted to go up market a bit but for an older lower output engine the cheaper stuff is fine.

the OP claimed by itself that the engine has been running on 100:1 without any issues so i think there is no need for discussing if the engine will accept this ratio or not

beyond that its a question of personal preferences. if you , running at 100:1 , cannot stop thinking about seized pistons use 50:1 - if you, running 50:1 , cannot stop thinking about fouled plugs and sooted rings use 100:1 .

i have a 5 hp 2000 yamaha kicker and never had any issues with 100:1 - and the plug is unchanged since two years. our marina has a pontoon with a 6 hp yamaha as workboat, also running 100:1 and also without any issues.

the recommended ratio will have margins for different operations and also some mixing mistakes- using the double amount of oil than recommended is from a technical point of view not a win situation, but like said- when you feel better with it , go for 50:1 , the engine will surely run with this mixing.
