I have a 70's 100 hp Evinrude electric shift. The motor runs well, but the lowe runit went out the other day. Initially the lower unit was locked in forward gear. I thought it may have been an electric issue but then the lower unit slipped out of forward and will not go into any gear. It was going forward at the time when it slipped out. After pulling the drain plugs on the lower unit no oil came out. The oil was changed before it was winterized and everything seemed normal. I am currently trying to buy a used electric shift lower unit and just swap them out. Is it possible to switch to a mechanical shift lower unit? Do you guys think it is worth taking the unit apart and try to find which piece is broken. I have an owners manual for the motor that has been helping thus far.

Thanks

Lucas

I found a lower unit with electric shift off of a 60 hp model. I have looked at the TOP SECRET threads but didn't find anything this early. Do you think they may interchange?

If it is a hydro-electric shift (post model number.....) then it requires oil to shift out of forward. The gearcase requires Type C gear oil, not the standard 85-90W gear oil.
It is difficult to switch from an electric shift to a manual shift lower unit.

If the lower unit ever loses power, it should default (stay) in forward gear-so that you can still run the engine to get home... You can't change to a mechanical shift lower. You have no shift mechanism under the cowling and your control box has no provision for a shift cable. You need to locate an engine tech that is familiar with these electric shift lowers-it may be difficult to find one that has experience working on them.

What happened to the lower unit oil, was the lower unit full of water?
Fill it with some type "C" oil and see if it shifts properly.

If It was mine,I'd take it apart and see what is wrong just for my own satisfaction.
