Finally took the advice of some guys here and removed the outdrive and it definitely is leaking out of the upper front seal. Took it to a shop. At first he says $350, then calls the next day and says it needs the input shaft and its gonna be another $675.

We were thinking of trading it in this weekend at the boat show. So I asked him how much to just put it back together and he refused. I dont want to spend $1000 on a boat we are trading. That could be part of a down payment.

He said $50 and I could come get it and he will give it back to me apart.

How hard is it to replace that seal myself?

What special tools do I need?

That was my thoughts. I cant stand shops that think because its a boat they can screw you over. I can buy that wrench for about $50

Not sure what you are working on but you can get a whole new upper unit for less than he is charging for just the seal from SEI. With his price you could almost buy a whole new drive from SEI.

What kind of quality do they have? Just makes me nervous because they are so cheap.

Why buy a hole new drive when you just need a seal and shaft.. I could see if it needed gears and bearings. Get it back and DIY. Or look around for another price that guys out to lunch.....By the way I run an sei lower and very happy with it.

It was a comparison, not really a recommendation. No reason not to get the tool and blast it out yourself.

OK I am getting the outdrive back and putting it back together myself. We signed papers on a new boat, so it has to be back and running by Saturday.

I put it back together myself. Cant believe how easy that was. New shaft was $65, new ujoints $25 for the pair, $15 in seals and about an hour in the garage to have it back on the boat with new seals. Seems to have worked because it passed the pressure test on the trade assessment.

This is why I do not take my stuff in to be worked on. I spent less than $100, they were nailing me for $1000. How the hell do they justify that?? Even with an hours labor at $150(which it should not have taken for experts that didnt even have to mount it back on the boat) it should have been closer to $250 to $300 tops!!
