just got this engine, it looks to be in great condition, but won't turn over. We put a new battery on it and when we turn the key, it just clicks at the engine. Any ideas as to where we should start?

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

All the repair advice given is well and good. Disassemble and clean everything, don't just look at it and assume.

Instead of running out and buying parts, run out and buy a multimeter and learn how to use it. Voltage checks at different points in the circuit will pinpoint the problem. Even a cheap $9 analog meter from Wal-Mart will suffice for what you are doing.

Just to be sure, make sure you can rotate the motor by hand. You didn't mention in your post whether the starter was engaging, "click" and not turning the motor over or turning the key to the start position and the solenoid clicks. As these wise and sage folks have said before, start with the simple stuff first. If the motor is new to you there may be some "dust and cobwebs" that need to be loosened up first.
