I have a 1972 105 HP Chrysler with a problem.
I can not get any water to pump through the motor. At first, I thought it was the impeller, so I pulled the lower end and replaced with a new unit. Did not solve the problem. Does anyone have any idea what else may be stopping the pump from flowing any water to the motor? By the way, I used a factory service manual for the instructions when I replaced the impleller and the water pump plate was installed correctly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 105 HP Cooling Problem

The impeller sits on a peg called a key on the drive shaft. Was this key there when you replaced the impeller? There is a small hole partially drilled into the drive shaft and that is where the key goes.

Next thing to look for is there is a rubber washer that the water tube connects to on the bottom of the power head. If the tube is not installed into this hole the water will not get up to the power head and just drain down the motor leg. I like to connect the water tube to the powerhead first then raise the lower unit up to the water tube when reinstalling the lower unit. The rubber seal should hold the water tube in place so you dont need to hold it.

Thanks for your response. They key is in the shaft and engaged with the impeller and the wter tube is inserted into the rubber seal in both the powerhead and the water pump. That is why I can't figure out what is wrong.
Would running off the hose be the problem? I am using a double feed muff with the water turned up all the way.
Help!!!!

Re: 105 HP Cooling Problem

Make certain you installed the impeller where it will turn in a clockwise direction (all vane tips pointing counter clockwise). If even some of the vane tips are pointing clockwise, you won't move any water and will probably shred the new impeller
To be sure you don't have an obstruction in the motor, drop the lower unit and slide a piece of 1/2 inch heater hose onto the water supply pipe. You can hold it in place with a standard hose clamp if you wish. Turn on a garden hose about 1/4 open and hold it firmly to the open end of the heater hose. Do not start the motor. You should have lots of water flowing through the motor and out the lower leg exhaust. If not , take the thermostat out and take a good look at it. Replace if needed or for peace of mind.
