I picked up a running '78 Johnson 15 hp from a local yard sale the other day, it appears to be a mix match of parts, the lower unit and tiller are from a mid 80's Evinrude going by the light blue color, the transom bracket is new as are the main rubber mounts. It runs great but I am curious whether or not it has the ability to charge a battery? It has electric start, but was being run with the tiller and has no on motor starter button. The tiller and front bracket are added from another motor and the choke is strictly manual, with no electric solenoid. Since the bracket is new, there is no model number at all, I am guessing the year by the decals and freeze plug serial number which the dealer confirmed as being late 1978/early 79.
I am sort of guessing that someone took a tiller motor and added a starter and two cables. If so could this still be able to charge a battery? There are no other external wires other than the two going to the starter solenoid and starter.
There is also a third plugged hole on the control panel just to the right of the choke lever, it's a plain rubber plug. Maybe a carb adjustment knob? Missing or not equipped? It has the standard kill switch but no on the motor starter button, the last owner had only a starter button on the console and a twin stick controller to run the motor with. The choke is still manual and applied by pulling the lever as on any tiller motor.
