if he didn't run it hard and changed the "oil" frequently... who knows, could be fine. easiest way to tell is to pull the top cover - that's likely the gearset that would take the worst / first hit from poor film stability...

Re: 10w40 in Outdrive

If the drive fails between now and 1 year, the Seller will pay the full price of an SEI outdrive. That will be in writing. The Buyer feels that if he, read me, changes the gear lube he should be fine.

Well, the guy was wrong for running NON-hypoid oil in the drive and he probably knows this now......

He also is an honest guy and the deal they're making proves that....

Just make sure that your friend changes the oil out for the correct type of oil. If it's a GEN II, make sure he gets Mercury HP oil for it and uses the service manual procedure to change it. Look up to the "Adults Only" thread, Mercstuff or other place to get the correct procedure to change it.

Tell him "Good Luck"

He may be just fine.....

alot of trucks, such as chevy 3/4 ton 5 speeds r using 5 w 30 motor oil n the transmission.just rebuilt one for a guy and thats what chevy said to use.

Correct! A Lot of manual transmissions use Dextron I/II/III etc also..... But they don't have hypoid gears in them either ................

Funny, I just got a call from the Seller and he asked if I would go boat shopping with him. He is going to send me some links of a couple boats he'd like to look at (29-34' cruiser) before he sets up a visit for 2 of them. I told him that I am not a surveyor, just well read on iBoats and know a couple things to look at.

If weather holds, we plan to go for a shake down run in the morning. Pulling the top cover on the drive sounds like a good idea when we pull samples of the fluids.

Everything points to this guy being a straight up good guy. We spent about 30 minutes talking about doing your own servicing. He told me he learned his lesson about 10 years ago when he didn't winterize his boat. From that day on, he created checklists and bought the service manuals. By the sounds of it, he doesn't run them hard. Didn't do much toy pulling either.

I invited him to join iBoats as well. Who sends me my referral fee. :D

Re: 10w40 in Outdrive

It was a good morning on the lake. Boat starts right up and runs good. Makes good slow starts and WOT starts. It is a bit slow to get out of the hole so smart tabs will probably be ordered in the next couple of days. With us three on the boat and 3/4 tank of gas, it runs just above mid range of WOT.

The upper gears look great. There is no wear evident and no blueing or browning of them at all.

No issues at all with the other fluid checks. Only issues that we have and Buyer agreed to repair is one trailer side marker light is out, low brake fluid for the surge brakes, no trailer spare, outdrive oil, and the trailer tires have never been replaced and have some minor cracking in them.

Thank you all for your help with this!!!
