11 Year Old Wound Opened Again

My wife was getting her hair done last Thursday. The first time since her chemo treatments. In her conversation with the woman that does her hair, the subject of cemetary plots came up. This womans mother passed away in 07 and was buried in a plot thats adjacent to the plot where our daughter is. In the conversation she mentioned to Donna that someone had told her that we had only purchased 3 grave sites in the plot and there was one available. She wanted to purchase it to be buried beside her mother. When Donna came home and mentioned this to me I told her that the hair dresser was given wrong information, that we had the deed to the plot where the baby is buried and that it is for 4 grave sites.

The next day when i got to work I started thinking about what the woman had said and started investigating.....It seems that the hair dresser and I both hold a deed to the cemetary plot where her mother is buried and that our daughter is buried in a plot thats next to the one I hold the deed to. I work for the county board of supervisors and have access to all county and chancery records. In searching the records I found another deed that the city of Canton issued to me for the plot where our daughter is buried BUT there is another family that also holds a deed to that same plot but has no one buried there. I'm to meet today with the city alderman whos ward that the cemetary is in and the city attorney to try and sort this mess out. Both guys I know personally and actually work with the aldereman. He is the communicatioins director for the county sheriff's department. I also know the other family who holds the other deed where my daughter is buried but not as well as I use to.

Any words of encouragement or advice is appreciated.

Don't know that there is any advice to be given at this point. You are meeting with the people that can help sort this out. I know there will be strong emotional ties here, but hopefully all deed holders involved will also understand this and it CAN be sorted out painlessly. Will be praying ...

Yeah, llike others have said, hopefully you/they can figure it out and do what's right. Sounds tangled for sure, but having those ties at the county and the personal connections should give you the best shot at a favorable solution. Good luck, and good job getting after it immediately.

Re: 11 Year Old Wound Opened Again

Well, i've met with the city attorney and the alderman. We met at the cemetary, I had copies of all the deeds in question and passed them out. I feel like a good solution will be reached. The only question right now is the Martin family. They are the ones that hold the other deed to where my daughter is buried. I know the Martins. They are good and honorable people.

When i came in from lunch there was a message from the County Coroner, who also owns the funeral home that handled the arraingements for my daughter. He seems to think he's found a good solution to the problem. Im waiting to hear what he has to say. We're playing phone tag right now. I'm also going to put him in touch with the city attorney so they can compare notes.

The coroner and I went to the cemetary back in 97 and picked out the plot where our baby is buried. She is in the spot I selected. Alex, the coroner, had a plat of the cemetary that showed that plot to be available. We then went to City Hall and consulted the official plat and it also said it was available. I cut them a check that day while we were there.

At the time of the plot purchase, this was section of the cemetary that was somewhat under construction. By that I mean they were building a road past where this plot was. There were no survey pins in place at that time that we found or saw marking the plots. Alex, with a measuring device, meassured from some pins on the adjacent road and detemined the plot placement. It is correct because it lines up with the pins that are marking the plot where the baby's grave is now.

I truly hope that it just a huge paper mistake.

Re: 11 Year Old Wound Opened Again

Donna is doing really well. The only symptom she still has from the chemo is the front third of both her feet are numb. From like the ball of her foot to the tips of her toes. She did have the same symptom in her hands but thats gradually gone away. She finally has gotten enough hair on her head to go get it colored and something done to it so she's not wearing hats and turbans anymore. That little trip is what got all this stuff posted above started. Which I guess is a good thing.

Right now she's letting me handle all this. She's not trying to get her head around it at this point. All I can say is....if she does decide to get up in it....Lord, help those that will suffer her wrath. It wont be purdy ! Take it from me.....I know first hand.

Re: 11 Year Old Wound Opened Again

It looks like this is going to get straightened out. It seems that the Martin family realized that someone was buried in one of their plots after the survey pins were put down. Rather than cause a problem for us they offered to swap the plots they purchased with some others that are equally close to their parents plots. We never knew this happened. What made all this confusing is that the city never canceled the deeds that were for the original plots that the Martins and I purchased. What needs to happen now is that the city has a good bit of leagal paper work to do.

Good for you, and kudos to the Martins for stepping up and doing the right thing from the start. Glad it is all working out for everyone.
