OK. So I need to Google how many CA's this engine needs and go to the big box store and grab one up and I think I have seen the muffs there as well. Probably not the best quality but I imagine for my needs now, it will get the job done. Thanks!!!

For cranking amps, 500 or better should do just fine. As long as the muffs fit the drive, they don't have to be anything fancy.

Quick Update:

Shay has called me and said that he has pulled all the old carpet up and washed out the inside of the boat, yet again. He said that he will be sending me pictures to upload soon.

It appears to me it has a closed coolant system, there is a tank to hold antifreeze.

OK...more questions or clarifications if you wish...

The impeller is not in the out-drive on this boat...it is on the front of the engine, but everyone keeps saying "change the impeller in the out-drive"

There is plenty of room in the bilge under the engine for an oil pan...although everyone keeps saying to pump the oil out.

There are no engine mounts on this engine as everything appears to be attached to the transom...I am confused as everyone keeps saying that the engine is attached to the stringers...ugh...someone please help explain all these items to me...please!!!

Also I posted some pictures on the blog to help with clarification of my questions...see link in signature please.

ok you pump the oil out to keep you bilge from getting nastyerrerr. if you can get an oil pan under the engine and get it out w/o spillage then go for it and dont worry about pumping it out. or I hate to say it drain it into the bilge it will be a PIA to clean out.

I would be willing to bet if there are no engine mounts that they have been removed and are MIA! I have never personally seen an I/O with out engine mounts somewhere in the bilge area. That might be a better question for the guys that frequent the engine forrums.

as for the impeller you may have both but seing that the engine has a closed cooling system (uses antifreeze instead of lake water{Open system}) I would bet that there is an impeller in the LU that uses lake water to keep the lower unit cool. Dont take my word for it though. that question would be better answered in the engine forrums.

Nope. Volvo's do not have an impeller in the lower unit. The only Impeller is on the front of the engine.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello everyone!

Shay and I spent about 3 hours yesterday cleaning and tearing the boat apart. We have exhausted his funds and now we are going to have to save up a bit of money and he said that he is going to look for odd jobs to do around the neighborhood as well. I am having a blast working with him on this project for sure!

EDIT

Thank you all for your help, you all have been amazing for sure!

Until next update...happy boating!

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Good morning iboat world!

OK, so yesterday was so hot and then it rained like you all would not even think so there was nothing to be done in the heat or rain. We do not have a garage...ugh.

So Shay and I took off to Walmart and Lowe's to look around and price some things out. We found a good deal on a set of adjustable wrenches at Lowe's. Got some prices on some pressure treated wood, 4 by 8 sheets and 2 by 4's. Wow they are expensive, is there gold in them? LOL!!!

They were Kobalts, 6 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch in a set on sale for 9.96 from 19.96. We went ahead and picked those up, just in case anyone is looking for a good deal.

Anyway back to the subject at hand.

To get this boat running and only running the items need are listed below:

5 quarts of oil, probably going to use Valvoline 10w-30. 15.76 at Walmart
oil filter 5.00-7.00 dollars at Walmart
battery 60.00 at Walmart
muffs 7.46 at Walmart
gallon of gas 4.00 any gas station

So after sales tax we are looking at 101.00.

Can anyone think of anything else we need to get this boat started?

I was thinking of making a video after the oil is changed to show everyone before we even crank this thing for the first time. To show if it cranks or if it is dead. That should be exciting even for those watching on the internet, it would be for me! So be watching for that video, of course it may be a week or two.

Anyway, I know you all are tired of my rambling, LOL!!!

Talk again soon!

When you use the muffs, duct tape them on tight if you need to. They will always leak some. You need good pressure from the hose. Plug the 1/2" hole in the bottom of the outdrive.

That engine does not have a choke. So cold starts can be tricky. May need a bit of gas down the carb. Turn on the water, try starting. If it starts, throttle it up to about 1200 RPM. Do you know how the throttle handle works? So you can throttle up in neutral?

Why don't you post in the Volvo I/O section???? You are getting some inexperienced advise in this forum.:)

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Good evening everyone!

OK. So we laid some old rags down and just let that nasty black crud run out of the bilge. It was an easy clean up. Very smelly oil...ugh...nasty stuff.

Also posted some pictures of Shay and I changing the oil.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

OK everyone here are my thoughts:

Marine carpet throughout, nothing fancy, just a basic covering.

Four swivel seats.

Build a basic box/sundeck for the bilge/stern area of the boat that allows easy access to the engine and is functional as a sundeck.

Install a live well.

Build side boxes for the throttle lever and gear to be placed.

Build a bow deck for one swivel seat and storage underneath and on the sides of the bow.

What does everyone think?

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello Everyone!

OK, so we have not given up on this boat. We are saving money at the moment and just trying to decide what is our next steps after the engine is running. I think the shifter cables are froze up with rust and we need to get those freed up. Also the out-drive has some grease fittings that need grease, I am sure.

So Shay and I are just talking about things and saving up money.

I will try to write updates better as time allows.

Talk soon!

I have been following your thread because it reminded me of my father and me working on his boat, then my boat and now my son's boat. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Since money is an issue, you might find some service information on your VP engine and drive in the FREE online public library at the link below. They have lots of Clymer stuff scanned which is not as complete as the "factory" version but it may help you get started with your project AND the price is right.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=393281

LOGIN as directed then drill down to: Small Engines, Marine/Boat Motors and Volvo or Volvo Penta

EDIT: There is a wiring diagram for your motor under "Intertec".

If you haven't started the engine yet(when was the last time it was started up)pull the distributor out. You will see the shaft that goes to the oil pump. You will probably have to make your own adaptor, but spin that shaft with a drill for a couple of minutes. This will preoil the engine and keep you from trashing it. Make a mark on the side of the engine, or on the valve cover so you will know where #1 spark plug goes when you put the distributor back in.
