If you haven't started the engine yet(when was the last time it was started up)pull the distributor out. You will see the shaft that goes to the oil pump. You will probably have to make your own adaptor, but spin that shaft with a drill for a couple of minutes. This will preoil the engine and keep you from trashing it. Make a mark on the side of the engine, or on the valve cover so you will know where #1 spark plug goes when you put the distributor back in.

That makes great sense, but would the same thing be accomplished by turning the engine over with the starter with the plugs out?

One of the major things I am worried about is the timing belt breaking and the pistons hitting the valves. That is unless someone here knows that the pistons can move up and down without the valves being touched. With this engine being a 1983, I think they would hit. Thoughts?

From what I understand, the B230 is a non-interference engine (no valve crash).

Also I believe the oil pump is spun independently of the distributor. In other words you are not going to be making anything that will drop into the distributor hole that will spin the oil pump. Best thing to pre-oil the engine is to do what your thinking. Pull the plugs, spin it over a few revolutions until you see the needle come up on the oil pressure gauge. If you haven't done your oil change yet, when you go to install the oil filter, fill it with as much oil as you can before you spin the oil filter on. This will make it so it takes less time to fill the filter and pressurize the oiling system.

OK. So the B230 is, but this engine is a AQ125A, or have I misunderstood? If I have, I apologize. Please explain.

Thank you

Sorry, remembered you were working with a AQ125A which is a B21 block, still non-interference.

You have a AQ125A which is a marinised B21 automotive engine. In the world of Volvo cars your engine is referred to as a B21, in the world Volvo Penta it's a AQ (aquamatic) 125 (horsepower) A (design A) engine.

Knowing this can be your friend in fact....

If you have a broken/worn out part on your engine which you know for a fact interchanges with an auto part, you will probably be more fruitful with a search on ebay, google, auto parts site entering in B21 rather than AQ125A. This of course would not include the electrical parts (distributor, starter, alternator) which must be marine, and a couple other assorted parts such as the camshaft or cooling system parts, etc.

Yes I agree completely. Since I have rebuilt many engines over the years, with this information I am able to look around for parts and maybe even could find a junk car with this engine and have it ready to drop in for Shay, just in case that one decides to fly apart. Thanks again! Very helpful indeed!

With your information about that engine I was able to research it even further, so that I can read about how to make this engine run better, different parts, and the history of this engine. All very useful information! I posted a bunch of information on Shay's blog so that I will have it as a reference. I just wanted to say "thank you" for that information. If you have any more information about that engine, please send it my way.

Your welcome. :)

Don't really have much more that I can think of for info, other than the B21 was a good engine in the 240 car. It was gutless for sure in that heavy car, but reliable, and would run hundreds of thousands of miles with proper care.

Hello everyone!

I posted a wiring diagram just in case anyone other than me needs to see it. Trying to be helpful.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello Everyone!

Shay and I were out messing around with the boat today and we were wondering what the red button on top of the starter was for?

I am guessing it is a remote starting button. But I am unable to push it, maybe it is froze?

Posted a picture of the area where it is at on the blog site.

Any ideas?

Just guessing, but the red button is likely a reset button.

Also, the red button has the number "40" on the top.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello everyone!

Shay's older brother (Ty) is with us this weekend and wanted to give us a hand with the boat.

So with his help we were able to get a bit more done, check out all the pictures on the blog site compared to earlier pictures.

Thank you!

I am almost 100% sure that is a circuit breaker rated for 40 amps, perhaps some more senior member could confirm...

Not sure if you have already seen these, but Don S. has been kind enough to make the workshop manuals for your engine/drive combo available online:

http://www.4shared.com/file/89797330/b32e5bf9/AQ125145_AB_Service_Manual.html

http://www.4shared.com/file/51930153/3a7e6375/270_Outdrive_service_manual.html

Page 52 of the engine manual shows the red button you speak of, which is inline with the power to the start motor, thereby IMO it is either a fuse or circuit breaker. I also have the same setup in my '83 Glastron Conroy X17, so I have seen exactly what you are talking about. Hope this helps. Good luck with the restoration, and lets see some pics!

Thank you for the links! They will come in handy for sure. Also posted some updated pictures on Shay's blog site and also posted some information about a rare coin that he found out by his boat in the ground too. Thank you again!
