Glad I could help (Thanks again to Don S.!) I will check out Shay's blog. It's great to spend time with your son on a project like this. I'm sure he will always remember it!

Yes. I made sure to give credit where it was due on Shay's blog. Those will come in handy for sure!

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello Everyone!

My next door neighbor gave us a marine battery. I put my meter on it and it had 6 volts showing. But it has been sitting outside for the last year. Do you all think that this battery will hold up? Are these battery's OK, to sit like this and then re-use? Being that it is a marine battery, I think it is worth a shot to see if it will work out for us. I know if this was a car battery, there would be no hope, but since I do not know that much about marine battery's, and by what I have heard they will stand this kind of use, or abuse, it may just be OK.

Thoughts?

I am thinking that maybe I need to start a new thread? What do the mods think? As no one is responding anymore?

Thoughts?

I warned you in the beginning. We're a lazy bunch. Off-loading us to the blog isn't going to get you thread views.

That marine battery may or may not be ok. Only way to be sure is charge it up and see. Auto parts stores can test them as well.

I wasn't trying to offload you all to Shay's blog...that is for him. I am asking questions here, I do post them there for future reference as he is with his mother for the next week. Just wondering if too much on one post is not getting questions answered is all. If you all choose to see pictures is up to you all.

Thanks for reminding me though.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

No worries Will, I am sure that no one will be offended. It is just as Ez said is all, lots of people do not like to go look other places for pics is all. I am sure that if you would post pics here that you would get more response. Would it be that tough to post pics here at the same time or close to it as you do your son's blog?

And as far as not as many responding, it goes that way sometimes. I have had the same thing happen with a few of my posts and though what did I do or say that was wrong. I got over that and realized that is just how it goes sometimes. And if you post something that many do not know about that you may not get replies.

So please do not get offended if you do not get any answers right away. If you ask a question and someone knows the answer I am sure that it will be answered, these are a great bunch of guys on here. Well that is my opinion anyway and whether anyone takes it or not really does not matter cause that is how I feel and that is what matters.

KellyC -

Thanks for the reply. I am not offended just making a statement about the question that I asked may need to be posted somewhere else is all. I do not want to double post. I can try to post pictures here but they are big as in MB big and I will have to see the limit that this site allows. Which pictures would you all like to see? Everyone that is on Shay's blog? Just let me know. Thank you!

Hi, Will my name is Jeff and i am pretty good on mechanical stuff. As far as the battery goes I'd check the levels if its not sealed then put it on a charger, do you have one? And let it charge for about an hour on low 2-5 amps. If it takes the slow charge then double ck the levels and put it on a 40 amp charge and see how that goes. If at any point in time it smells like rotten eggs or get very HOT. STOP charging immediately and plan on getting it replaced. If it was my deal I'd just use one from a car/ truck for the trying to start and test run purpose.

Hello Will,
If you use the "go advanced" option in your replies and "manage attachments" , you will be able to upload pics. It will automatically resize them for you.

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Will and Shay-We had that exact same boat when I was a teenager. We also had to replace the rear portion of the deck and the ski locker, but our stringers and transom were fine. That engine is no power house but ours was very reliable and easy to work on. There are no front motor mounts-it hangs from the transom. The beauty of that engine is its simplicity. Timing belt is easily replaced, bellows are easily replaced, fresh water cooling system and no impeller is very maintenance friendly. Once you get it running it should be quite reliable. We owned that boat for 20 years and even rebuilt engine once, so if you have any questions, please ask. Congrats on the project, it sure brings back alot of fond childhood memories!

Hey everyone!

I enjoy to see people responding and talking about working with their Dad's on boats and cars and whatnot. Amazing!

Anyway, back to the boat, we have oil now 10w40, and rectangle muffs, a donated battery, just to use to start the engine, and maybe as a back up. We still need an oil filter, and a gallon of gas.

The plan is to make a video of the boat turning over and cranking up for the first time in years. So please be on the look out for that video. I will give you all a heads up when we are planning to make all this happen. Shay is with his mother for the next week and then he is headed to the beach with his grandparents for a couple of days, so it may be the next weekend before it is ready to "run". I do not work on this boat without him here, as this is his boat, even though I could go out there and get it all done, that is not what this project is about. I am sure you all understand.

I will update you all on anything new as it comes available!

Thank you all for your continued support!

Yes. I agree. My girl is taking tons of pictures and making videos of us talking about what we or he would like to do with the boat and the plans and whatnot.

Again, thank you all for your continued support!

Re: 11 year olds first boat...

Hello everyone!

Well today was a good and bad day, so to speak. I have posted some videos on Shay's blog. The "Shae", which is what Shay named the boat. "Shae" is the female version of "Shay". Anyway I think it has some big electrical problems and I have a ton of questions about this engine. I do not want to double post so I am going to add the link to all my engine/electrical questions in the Volvo Penta I/O thing, once I have created it.

Link is here now:

I did try to add pictures and the videos to this thread but it keeps asking for a URL, and they are locally on this computer so I do not know how to make that work, so I posted everything to Shay's blog, sorry.

Thank you!

You can add pictures from your computer by clicking on Reply, then Go Advanced. At the top you can click on the paper clip icon for Attachments, and there is a pop-up for adding pictures. (I believe videos have to be hosted externally.) When you are done, you can either Preview Post, or Submit Reply. Good luck.

OK. I tried that but i keep getting errors:

Invalid File and File size too big. Invalid file was 1.71MB and the file that was too big was 2.73MB, I think this site is locked down tight and I am not going to be able to post anything on here. So it is awesome that I have the Shay's Boat Project blog thing to post all that stuff on. I am going to try again later, maybe was something wrong with the servers or network or something.
