I had a weird comment on the youtube videos of Shay trying to crank his boat. The person said they were very funny and they couldn't stop laughing. I was like..."what?".

I think it was just spam but just checking with you all to see if I really need to go to the website that that person was telling me to go to.

Good evening everyone! New Updates!

OK. So Shay and I were talking last night over the phone and here is the plan.

Get the engine running and stable.

Box in the risers and secure some pedestal seating. 2 by 2.

Box in the bow and place one seat up there, or maybe just a storage area.

Box in the bilge area and create a sun deck.

Box in the sides for small equipment.

Lay a new floorboard, over what is already there.

Basically make this a basic functional fishing/ski boat.

He does not wish to tear the floorboards out at the moment. He said that when he gets older he wants to redo this boat from the ground up, but for now due to limited funds and he wants to see his boat on the water, this is the current plan.

I understand that to do it once and the right way is best, but he is just 11, (don?t tell him I said that, LOL) and he wants to go fishing and skiing, this is his boat, and I will help him however I can.

Any thoughts?

Have your core sampled the transom yet? That means drilled into it using a 1/4" drill bit about 1" deep and as low as you can get and at several locations. Check the shavings and see if they are light tan and dry or dark and wet. You need to do the same to the stringers if you can get to them. These play an integral part in the overall structural integrity of the Boat. If they are NOT Sound and Solid then the boat MAY NOT be safe to operate.:redface:

Gonna have to agree with the last two posts, from the looks of the boat when you got it it was obviously sitting out in the weather.

Above all keep it safe, after all you want your son to be fishin and skiing for the rest of his hopefull long life.

Yea....putting a new deck over an old rotten one is like putting a crown over a decaying tooth....it compounds the problem.

Of course an 11yr old wants to get out on the water - and of course his patience will grow thin - but allowing him to skip crucial steps won't help him in the long run - even over the course of his life.

No not yet. Can you use the pictures that I have posted to show me "about" where I should do this? The transom on this boat is a metal plate that holds the engine up and also holds the outdrive. We have knocked around this area with a rubber mallet and it "sounds" solid. But being that I am a first time boat person, I may have someone come out and do all these things for me. Are any of you who know this stuff in North Carolina? I would be willing to pay gas money for your trip. Just let me know.

Yes. I do agree with you as well. I think I need someone to come out and take a look at all these things you all speak of, as I am not sure of my ability to spot "problems", being I am new to boats as well.

OK, everyone, I am going to hijack my own thread for a post or two.

The trailer, what do I need to do to get, or check it over, so that I can take Shay's boat to a shop?

The trailer only traveled about 1 and half miles from where we bought it to where we live.


I would like to set the boat off of the trailer and work on it a bit.

Thoughts on how to do this?

I have removed several outboard-powered boats, with and without motors, from trailers by pushing them off onto auto tires covered with a piece of carpet. Having the stern eyes connected by rope to a tree or deadman helps control where the boat will land regardless of method.

So I drill into those areas just a bit and I will be able to tell if they are rotted, right?

How do i fill the holes or what do i use to fill the holes back in so that they maintain their integrity?

OK. So yesterday I went out to the boat and started looking around.

The top of the transom, right above the engine, the wood was good and hard and tan. Looked awesome. Today I am planning on taking some samples and posting the pictures. I will keep everyone up to date on how the shavings look. I am going to drill a hole at the circles and then take a picture so that you all can let me know what needs to be done.

I donated $5 bucks Joseph. Mostly because I admire you taking your time with your son to work through this. I don't care if you spend it on beer or whatever. The point being, I never had a dad that would do this, and it always brings me to tears to read your damn thread and blog! lol

Good luck and just take it slow, keep your son in check that it's not an overnight job.

This experience will last a lifetime for the both of you, regardless of what next year brings.
