On the 99 Yukon, did a fair job of watching me, getting drain pan, prepping new filter and pouring in oil, and we did the easiest belt change, I'd never done it on Yukon, wow, a 3/8 ratchet to pivot tensioner, yank off old belt and install new, like a 10 min job - firgot to tae pics!! Next time :) And he actually repeated to me what he learned - he eats a lot, but I just may keep him!! LOL :)
A really nice weekend, and one of his buddies overnight here, then he went to same at other buddies, lots of swimming pool, baseball and fun :)

well it sounds like in a couple of years you will have your own personal oil/lube tech to do your oil changes and light maintenance on your vehicles. as i have said before, in your other post, you are saving him alot of money in the future. good job to your son for wanting to learn, not many kids do. i think you have a keeper and you probably dont want to give him up for adoption any time soon...lol

Yeah , better not let him out for adoption any time soon!!!! Wait, I need another helper....darn.

Good job teaching him things. Life's lessons are pretty good to learn early on, even if it seems as though it is just an oil change, it is so much more.

Little M, my daughter , is 7. She did her first spark plug change on Grandpy's Mercury 650 at the age of 5 , with my direction, but she "got" it. Also got to some additional bolts my paws couldn't get to, but she could. Made her first birdsmouth cut at the age of 6. Learned to sweat copper pipe at 6. Currently we are doing a small engine together, taking a while , but she runs the wrenches....And I have been teaching her how to cook, and she is getting pretty good it!

You should be proud that you boy can listen, and follow through, I know I am proud of my little girl, as evidenced by the above boasting!

Yeah, I know! But she is something else to be sure. Gonna make some boy very happy one day!:D:D:D She asks if she can help with anything, and I say yes , and then show her how it is done , and she does it with ease and pretty much properly. I am in so much trouble......

Sorry for the hijack EZ! Maybe in a few years ( ok , 20 !) the kids can meet. Oh , and she likes guns too!:redface:

yeah he's a good kid, not terribly excited when I tell him we're gonna wrench, but when we actually do it, he really pays attention and I told him he should be proud of himself for doing so much, I dont think many of his friends do. :)

If you keep that up, he'll be doing an engine swap for you when he's 16, like mine did.:D

I smile every time I think of that poor kid struggling to get the job done while he thought I was ignoring him. He missed one wire, which I put right when he wasn't looking. When he asked me to check his work, I just started it up, much to his surprise.

Great memories for sure.

Now he has a lot of struggles as a contractor in this economy, but keeping wheels turning isn't one of them.

My oldest is almost 16 now.

I tried to start him young, (I work on autos) but he never got an interest in it. My youngest (12) seems to have a mild interest in car. But not working on them, He wants a "Fast and Furious" car. Not in my driveway I said... It's American muscle or nothin'.

I say they all should know how to do basic maintenance on vehicles.

I recently helped my step-son change his tranny fluid and filter ... but then again, he is 25, so it is about time! I actually got him to do some body work also! That was cool! Wish I could have gotten him started younger, but he wasn't buying it and didn't want anything to do with me at that time. Now we are good buds and HE is taking me to the PSU game on Saturday as thanks for helping and teaching him a few things.

I remember holding flashlight for Dad back in the 80's when working on the Mercruiser 330, changing belts, distro manifold after it was bead blasted, a leaking thru hull exhaust hose...

now it's time to get my four yearold boy to do the same! with another 330 mercruiser no less! I lOVE IT!

That is the way. Teach them young. One of my sons wants nothing to do with those things and the other will work with me all day.
