Long story short: I was out for a ride and the motor started dying and then we got some white smoke comming from the cowling and then the motor died.

Got towed back to the marina, someone ran a compression test and found the bottom 2 cylinders were more than 25% off between the 2 top ones.

So the guy sprayed in a mixture of WD40 + Auto Trans fluid saying he was trying to save the motor. We got compression back all around on all 4 cylinders, however, when I took it for a test drive yesterday it doesent want to rev higher than 2900 RPM at full throttle.

The mechanic says he's not an outboard expert but knows motors. He is looking at the crabs next, but I dont see why anything else should have changed as the motor was running like a champ before all this.

What do you guys think the next corse of action should be ?

Thanks!!!

Pull the heads', and take a look at the top's of the pistons', and cylinder walls. That oil mixture sprayed in would raise the compression numbers', but would then just burn off when you started the engine.

So I guess this means I should pull the boat out of the water ? Is this a big job to remove the heads ?

Thanks for your quick reply, I really appreciate it!

I should also add that we went for a few test runs after he sprayed the stuff in the cylinders. We ran a compression test after each run and it was still the same.

How bout sharing what the problem was?

Also if the guy who gave you a quote of $2k was not a marine mechanic I recommend that you take it to someone who is. Marine 2 cycle engines are a lot different than rebuilding a Ford.
