Please confirm with me my starter is bad. 2 good fully charged batteries, very good borrowed 2/0 gauge jumper cable. Starter engages, but spins real slow in spurts. Jumpered + on both sides of solenoid and directly on cleaned power lug with same effect. Use cleaned bolt on block for ground, tried diff location all w/ same effect. Cranked maybe 20 secs max, starter body and bendix are pretty warm to touch after. Local autozone spun starter and claimed it failed. Starter spun, but they put no resistance on motor. Auto parts place tried to look it up for replacement but failed.
Is it something I can pick up at an auto store, or strictly marine? I have a rebuilder near my work as another option. Sorry for long post, and thanks ahead... Joe

Re: 112 spl starter troubles

take it to the rebuilder to test it.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

IF you have an Oriellys, Napa, you can get new starter there. IF it was me unless the rebuilder has a good name i wouldnt use. I would also try to stay a way from use starters. Here is a place that sells replacement starters they are cheaper have a 1 yr. warranty. www.dbelectrical.com. Remember cheaper isnt always better.

Re: 112 spl starter troubles

Guys, just thought I'd share my experience. Received new starter from DBelectrical today, (fortanetely mine was the lesser expensive) and installed in outboard and motor turned over like a raped ape!!! Im replacing cracked spark plug wires (on order) so plug wires were all pulled. Just thought I'd crank it after install and right off the bat I can tell its going to crank once I get my new wires. My local marine mechanic told me old starter was probably drawing too much amps ( hence warm cable and starter body )
Yes I was one of the 10% troubles, but I also had bad cables and contacts!
See ya on the water! Joe
