11'4" boston whaler and motor question

what's the largest outboard you have put on this boat. it's rated for 10 but i can't imagine putting around with that. i had a 15hp older merc but the gears broke. i'm now considering an 18 hp tohatsu or 20 merc. i've known people who have used the 20 with no problem. the 15 is justs not enough with 2 people and camping gear.

Just like most boats, Louis, even a Whaler will kill you if you do stupid things with it. Overpowering is stupid.<br /><br />If you have to go faster or carry more than the boat is rated for, get a bigger boat.<br /><br />You can install the console and remote steering and raise the SAFE HP rating to 20.<br /><br />Or you can sell me that li'l jewel and go buy yourself a 13. It is rated for 40 and goes like hell with a 25.<br /><br />Red sky at night. . .<br />JB
